Event Details

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will host a Python Patrol ResponderTraining Workshop on June 10, 2014. The Python Patrol Responder Training is for those individuals who need to know how to safely capture, remove and report pythons as part of their job duties and those individuals who are willing to volunteer their time to safely catch and remove invasive snakes as a Python Patrol Responder in south Florida.

The workshop will start indoors with a presentation about Burmese pythons in Florida, regulations for this species, how to identify and detect invasive reptiles and report sightings. Participants that expect to capture and transport live Burmese pythons will also fill out a python removal permit application at the workshop. Afterwards participants will head outdoors for a demonstration and practice catching wild-caught nonnative snakes. Workshop participants must wear long pants and closed-toe shoes for the hands-on capture portion of the training.

All participants are required to take the free online REDDy training and either submit the certificate by email to Jenny.Novak@MyFWC.com or bring a printed copy to the training.  REDDy (Introduced Reptile Early Detection and Documentation) is a free online course that takes up to 40 mintues and is a great overview of identification and reporting of invasive reptile sightings. The website also provides handouts, datasheeets, and ID tools that can be helpful in the field.  The REDDy training is available at http://ufwildlife.ifas.ufl.edu/reddy.shtml and is required to qualify for a python removal permit.
