Event Details

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Exotic Species Coordination Section will host a Python Patrol Training Workshop on May 23, 2014.

The Python Patrol Training Workshop will start indoors with a presentation about Burmese pythons in Florida, regulations for this species, and how to identify invasive reptiles and report sightings. Afterwards participants will head outdoors for a demonstration and practice catching large, invasive snakes. Participants must wear long pants and closed-toe shoes for the hands-on capture portion of the training.

Permit applications that allow for the collection and/or live transport of Burmese pythons and other conditional reptiles will be available at the workshop.  Participants that wish to qualify for a permit are required to take the free online REDDy training and either submit the certificate by email to Jenny.Novak@MyFWC.com or bring a printed copy to the training.  REDDy (Introduced Reptile Early Detection and Documentation) is a free online course that takes up to 40 mintues and is a great overview of identification and reporting of invasive reptile sightings. The website also provides handouts, datasheeets, and ID tools that can be helpful in the field.  The REDDy training is available at http://ufwildlife.ifas.ufl.edu/reddy.shtml.
