Pursuing Philanthropic Support for your Project
A Faculty Briefing Series
Presented by The Office of Foundation and Corporate Giving
With limited staff and resources, our goal is to better enable faculty to engage in discussions with foundations in support of their projects and efforts. This program is developed as a series that will cover aspects of raising philanthropic support.
You have heard of the Foundation and Corporate Giving (FCG) office but what do they do? Come learn about the various services FCG offers to help you be more successful in raising private organizational support. In each session, we will also provide an overview of Foundation and Corporate Giving at UC Davis, the services we offer, and how we intersect and collaborate with other campus units.
Grant Writing--The Basics:
February 13, Noon - 1:30PM
Faculty members are conversant in the writing of government grants, but often become flustered when attempts to secure foundation funding fall flat. This session will discuss the ins and outs of grant writing for organizations, how it is different from government grant writing, and how Foundation and Corporate Giving can help you stand out from the crowd.
You Have a Private Gift/Grant. Now What?:
March 20, Noon - 1:30PM
Your project has been funded by the XYZ Organization but it is coming to an end. How do you continue the relationship? We will discuss the principles of stewardship and why those annoying little reports requested annually or semi-annually are critical to relationship building and a possible path to continued or new funding.
The Philanthropic Landscape:
Why should I consider foundation investment? What is the Office of Foundation and Corporate Giving? What is a Chancellor’s Prospect? This program will help faculty better understand the world of organizational philanthropy on a national scale and at UC Davis. We will talk about the types of foundations, the programs/projects that most appeal to this constituency and other key information to make sure you understand how foundation funding works.
We will also provide an overview of Foundation and Corporate Giving at UC Davis, the services we offer, and how we intersect and collaborate with other campus units.
Foundation Research and Preparing to Contact and Organization:
A colleague has suggested that your proposal idea would be a great fit for a foundation—any foundation. But which one? This program is designed to assist faculty to identify potential supporters. We will walk you through prospect research 101 and discuss the nuances of determining whether this organization is “fit” for philanthropic partnership.
Before you send that proposal to an organization, there are several steps you can take to “warm up the transom”. This session will discuss what should be considered as you work toward applying for private philanthropic support. From calling the organization to asking the right questions, following a few simple steps greatly increases your likelihood of success.
A Session for Young Investigators:
Recommended for New Faculty - By Appointment, 530-752-5706

Now come learn about how UC Davis’ Office of Development and Alumni Relations can help you create a pathway to private support success. Foundation and Corporate Giving is at your service and eager to learn about your research interest. Through this program, young faculty members are introduced to potential philanthropy partners and we will work with you to help you understand the investment landscape of foundations and corporations, which is becoming increasingly critical in this challenging federal funding environment.
