MongoDB, the leading open-source NoSQL database, is helping developers build and scale apps more rapidly. It has been adopted by a growing number of organisations, including The Met Office and The National Archives.
This all-day hackathon, proudly supported by MongoDB EMEA, will bring together developers, DBAs and architects alike, to rapidly develop innovative data-rich apps for the public sector.
This will be a great opportunity to network across the wider public sector, learn new hipster skills, tackle problems and play with ideas you never had the time or skills for. You may even make a friend or two!
Fast WiFi, free hosting, copious caffeine and the assistance of the MongoDB tech team, in the Old St/Shoreditch area. And an all-star judging panel awaits. Up for the challenge?

What should I bring with me?
A laptop, charger and lots of good ideas and enthusiasm.
Will there be free WiFi?
Yes, free WiFi will be provided throughout the day, but feel free to also bring mobile broadband dongles as backup.
How can I host my application on the day?
Free hosting will be provided for the day; feel free to spin up and spin down an allocation of cloud servers as required.
What can I work on?
We would encourage development of all sorts of applications that use data innovatively – big and smaller data alike – to help public sector and government departments.
Please submit ideas for projects that you’ve considered but not had the time or skills to develop, or even projects that you’ve started that need an extra hand to get moving again. This is an opportunity to work with some of the very best developers from across the public sector, in conjunction with the MongoDB tech team, to bring ideas to life and showcase.
Can I join as an individual?
Yes, we welcome individuals as well as small teams.
What happens if I create an app that rocks?
Great! That’s exactly what we’d like to see. Hackers retain all copyright and we’d encourage open source projects to be born on the day.
I have an idea for an app, how can it be developed at the hackathon?
We aim to crowdsource ideas from across the public sector community in the lead-up to the day. A website will soon be online to help capture your ideas and enable you to see other proposed hacks. Start your own or join one you would find interesting and feel you can contribute.
How are the teams composed?
We would really like to see multi-agency, multi-discipline teams so best practice and experience can be shared. It’s also hopefully a great opportunity for you to network and meet new colleagues. Using the website, you’ll be able to self-organise and attach yourself to a project that interests you.
Will there be prizes for the winning apps?
Yes, sponsors will be providing prizes. Stay tuned for more details.
I’m not a developer, can I still join in?
Of course. Teams may need assistance with frontend graphic design and system/database administration, as well as good technologists to think through the concepts. Just because you may not be directly cutting the code doesn’t mean you’re not welcome or useful to a team.
Will the hackday be featured online?
Yes, we anticipate interest from the media and we will be actively tweeting developments throughout the day. We encourage everyone to join in. We plan to live stream the demos at the end of the day so anyone interested that couldn’t make it can tune in and contribute on Twitter – and a recording will be available for anyone that missed out.
Will there be technical assistance from MongoDB?
Yes, the MongoDB technical team, including solution architects and engineers, will be on hand to help you as you develop throughout the day.
How will the end-of-day demos work?
We will be providing each team up to 10 minutes to showcase their efforts, with 5 minutes dedicated to a live demo and 5 minutes for Q&A with the audience and the judges. This will be your chance to shine and impress the judges and also to receive valuable feedback from others.
It’s a long day, where can I stay?
There are plenty of local hotels that cater for different budgets and tastes. Feel free to get in touch with us if you need any help.
