About the workshop
This seminar explores the benefits and limitations of commonly prescribed psychotropic medications used in the treatment of mental health conditions for children and youth in out of home care. Designed for child and youth care workers, group home care providers, support staff, and foster parents, this session will provide a basic understanding of current trends and classes of medications, awareness of common side effects, and basic knowledge of interactions with common street drugs. A special focus will be on the value of cultivating healthy relationships and positive developmental opportunities as a more developmentally valid way to empower children and adolescents.
Objectives of Course
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
(1) Integrate knowledge of benefits and limitations of commonly prescribed psychotropic medications used in the support of children and youth in out-of-home care
(2) Identify drawbacks and/or side effects of various classes of medications and when to consult or refer for help
(3) Recognize the value of a more limited role of medications in favor of healthy relationships and positive developmental opportunities

About the Presenter
Robert Foltz, Psy.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and assistant professor of child and adolescent clinical psychology at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. He has extensive experience working in inpatient and residential settings and consults with schools and child-serving organizations on the assessment and treatment of troubled children and youth. Dr. Foltz is on the editorial board for the Journal of Ethical Human Psychology and Psychiatry and the editorial board for Reclaiming Children and Youth. His areas of expertise include the psychological and neurological impacts of trauma and the critical evaluation of evidence-based treatments.
