Social Media + Government = A Winning Combination?
In 2005, one of the first government blogs in the nation was launched right here in Orlando. Its purpose was to engage citizens in a discussion about what was going on by a governmental agency. Unfortunately, the blog was deemed “too new a medium” for use by a government agency and the project was killed. At the time, blogs were still very new and many questions remained about how they could be utilized by the government.
But leading up to the Presidential bid for the White House in 2008, President Barack Obama utilized social media to its full extent – with blogs, podcasts, videos, Twitter, Facebook and more. After taking office in 2009, President Obama issued an “Open Government” initiative aimed at working to ensure the public trust and a “system of transparency, public participation and collaboration.” Since this time, numerous agencies have begun their own social media presence.
This luncheon will feature several local experts who will discuss the use of social media in the government and how it can be a winning combination.

Shawna Vercher – consultant who worked on President Obama’s online social media campaign in the State of Florida
Heather Fagan – Press Secretary for Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer will discuss the City of Orlando’s use of social media

The Citrus Club is located on the 18th floor of the BB&T Bank Building, at the corner of Orange Avenue and Jackson Street in downtown Orlando. Parking is available in the Jackson Street parking lot and the Lincoln garage on Ornage Avenue. Meter parking is also available on the adjacent streets. Unfortunately, we do not validate parking.
