Promoting Student Dialogue Through Online Education Modules (LPC)

Students are hungry for authentic dialogue in their classes, but tune out when attempts turn into debates or lectures. Using technology to “flip the classroom” and teach concepts online, class time can be maximized for student dialogue and deeper levels of meaning making. While the Center for Intercultural Programs historically has partnered with faculty to implement live workshops that blend lecture, activities, and dialogue about diversity, recently the Center collaborated with selected faculty to create animated, narrated online diversity modules to pilot with different courses in order to provide necessary concepts for richer in-class dialogue. By assigning online diversity modules to students as pre-class “reading,” students have more time to participate in experiential learning simulations, dialogue about their life experiences, and discuss how course content is reflected in their personal and professional lives. This workshop will explore best practices for online education module design, integration into live classes, and learning evaluation design and utilization. This workshop would particularly benefit faculty who are interested in: creating online modules, teaching students diversity content online, and maximizing student dialogue through online content delivery.
