What is Tynker?
Tynker is a visual language designed for students to learn programming. Tynker lets students focus on logic and design thinking, without the frustration of learning the syntaxor structure of programming languages like C and Java.
This 2.5-hour workshop will provide a fun introduction to programming for kids using Tynker.
The workshop will introduce basic programming concepts like creating scenes, playing sounds, moving characters, and creating conditionals and loops. Students will:
- Create interactive stories. Imagine and set up their own story line, draw their own actors, make sound effects, and create an adventure.
- Design and build simple games. Explore different aspects of game-building -- game controls, interactivity, animation and physics.
- Participate in collaborative activities. Brainstorm ideas with other aspiring creators, learn to code using interactive tutorials and puzzles, debug code, and problem-solve.
Girls attending will participate in one of two age groups: (a) 7-10 yrs old and (b) 10-13 years old. Parents will have the chance to learn about Tynker and, while at the workshop, try out Tynker's online course.
By the end of the workshop, parents and students will learn how to create projects using Tynker. If desired, parents may enroll their children in Tynker's home course to further learning outcomes: programming concepts, logical and creative thinking, problem solving and how to become a Maker.
You will need to bring your own laptop. Computers will not be provided.
Tynker is a new computing platform designed specifically to teach children programming skills and computational thinking in a fun and imaginative way. Built by Silicon Valley technology veterans to inspire their own children, and children everywhere, to understand and enjoy programming through building games, mobile apps, creating music, animating drawings and more.

ABOUT GIRLS INNOVATE! PROGRAMS
This fall, together with and led by girls, moms, and members of the community like you, Girls Innovate! is putting together some workshops/projects to help girls explore, learn and lead by example. For every idea that comes up, we ask: what question/problem does this workshop/project seek to take one step towards addressing? We then design the project around our program goals and values, harnessing the power of community to engage speakers, mentors and project coordinators.
This workshop seeks to take one step towards addressing the question: How do we engage more girls in embracing math and computer science at a young age?
