Event Details

Programming is for everyone! We'll be learning to program using
Python, one of the most popular programming languages in the world,
with applications from tiny to massive. This class aims to get you up
and running to the point where you can begin to solve problems in
code, and understand enough about the process where you can learn
independently after you leave. The goal is to take students through
the basics of programming, via practical, working examples, to
creating practical and useful small programs. You won't necessarily
walk away ready for your interview at the hottest tech start up, but
hopefully, we'll pique your interest, and prepare you to start
learning more.

This is a class for programming beginners. We assume no prior
knowledge or experience with programming but we do assume a moderate
degree of technical interest and inquisitiveness. This is only a few
hours, so it will be a bit of a crash course, but we can adjust the
pace of the class as needed.

* A laptop computer, ideally running MacOS X or Linux. Windows people
can either install a Linux Virtual Machine using VirtualBox, VMWare,
or the like, or install Cygwin. The first option is preferable. It is
most helpful if you get this figured out before coming such that we
don't spend time in setting up peoples' programming environments. If
you have questions, please contact the instructor.

This class is taught by NYC Resistor member Guy Dickinson, who, when
he's not at Resistor, is a software engineer at a large social
network, and a graduate student at NYU Courant.
