A Lecture by

Shinya Murase
Professor, Sophia University and Member of the United Nations International Law Commission

Tuesday, April 9, 2013
7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., with a reception to follow

Professor Murase, a professor of law at Jochi (Sophia) University Faculty of Law, has also been a visiting professor at Columbia Law School; a judge on the Administrative Tribunal of the Asian Development Bank; and currently serves as a member of the UN International Law Commission. Professor Murase received his B.A. from International Christian University, Tokyo, his LL.M. from University of Tokyo Graduate School of Law, and his S.J.D. from University of Tokyo Graduate School of Law.

Japan's approach has long been the passive reception of established international law norms.  Today, many believe Japan should play a more active role in international law making.  In this timely lecture, Professor Murase sets out an agenda for Japan in new international lawmaking, including in the areas of disaster relief, protection of the atmosphere, and with respect to the changing security environment of Japan.  As to the latter topic, Professor Murase will address Article 9 of the Constitution and the territorial problems in the East China Sea.
