Introduction

The best way to learn web development is to start building web applications. We've designed an experience around doing just that.

This course is focused on building a product. We'll guide you through re-creating our own version of the popular website, Airbnb.

We will build everything together, line-by-line and we end with a working application. No slides or fluff. Just focused, practical guidance.

Schedule

Weeknight Sessions:

Session 1: February 19th, 6PM - 9PM

Session 2: February 20th, 6PM - 9PM

Weekend Sessions:

Session 3: February 22nd, 10AM - 5PM

Session 4: February 23rd, 10AM - 5PM

Instructors

Trevor McLeod and Brian Falk will be teaching. Please visit NodeLingo to learn more about the instructors.

Course Overview

We will be using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to re-build Airbnb from scratch. In the process of creating our own web API, we will also be learning Node.js, a powerful "server-side" JavaScript platform. Learning Node.js delivers two key advantages: (1) allows us to focus on learning a single language (JavaScript) and (2) introduces you to one of the most popular platforms for web development that companies like Airbnb are already using today!

Wednesday & Thursday, February 19th & 20th

We will focus on building a rich, responsive, front-end application to display information and allow users to create, book, and query for rentals. We'll be focused on fundamentals, while also leveraging some of the most prominent tools: JQuery, Twitter Bootstrap and Handlebars.js. Teaching solid, fundamental JavaScript remains our mission throughout.

The goal for the first two sessions is to introduce and implement patterns for consuming web APIs and displaying data in a simple, clean user interface.

Saturday & Sunday, February 22nd & 23rd

During the weekend sessions, we will dive into server-side web development and engineer our own API. We will be using Node.js to design our back-end. Again, leveraging prominent tools like Express and MongoDB to build.

The goal for the weekend is to understand Node.js' event-based architecture and learn how to create RESTful services that accept and respond to web requests.

Conclusion

The patterns we will cover are meant to be replicated across a wide range of domains, and we've carefully chosen each component to be representative of the tasks you'll encounter while building modern web applications.

What you'll learn: HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, Express, MongoDB, and Node.js.

Pre-reqs

Experience building with HTML/CSS and working knowledge of JavaScript is required. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns about the required experience level.
