Japanese Woodblock (Mokuhanga)

Date & Time: July 24-26, Friday 6-9pm, Saturday & Sunday 10am-4pm (3 session workshop)

Description: Relief prints tend to be bold and graphic, but the Japanese method with its water-borne pigments, brushes and hand printing allows for softer and more painterly relief prints. This workshop will touch on all aspects of the process: transferring images to woodblocks, carving with Japanese tools, using the kento registration system, and printing with brushes and a baren. Participants will learn to create a bokashi (gradation), control textures using varying amounts of water or rice paste, overprint two colors to create a third color, and soften carved edges. The workshop is open to beginners as well as students who want to expand their relief printing practice.

Tuition: $375

Materials: Instructor will provide a list of materials to students at least one week before the class. Students can expect to spend between $40-$80 on these materials depending on the quality of tools.

White Line Woodcuts

Date & Time: July 27 & 28, 6-9pm (2 session workshop)

Description: White line woodcuts, also called Provincetown prints, are an interesting hybrid between monoprints and Japanese style watercolor woodcuts. Developed in the early 20th century by Blanche Lazzell and others, white line prints are polychrome prints done on a single block of wood rather than on multiple blocks. A line drawing or design is incised on the block with a knife or gouge creating v-shaped cuts, which become white lines when printed. Each area between the lines is hand colored with watercolor or gouache and printed with a baren or wooden spoon until the print is complete. Although the block can be used over and over again, every print will be unique because of the variations in paint application. All experience levels welcome.

Tuition: $150

Materials: Instructor will provide a list of materials to students at least one week before the class. Students can expect to spend between $40-$80 on these materials depending on the quality of tools.
