Barbara Brotman, the Tribune’s longtime Outdoors Adviser, has biked through snowstorms, rock-climbed on a lakefront wall of doubtful legality and since creating the column in 2004 has hiked, kayaked and birded throughout the Chicago area, learning from experts all the way. She is winner of the 2013 Chicago Audubon Society award for environmental writing.
