Presidio Presents: A Conversation with Paul Hawken
The 2013-2014 season of the Presidio Presents Speaker Series will kick off with a conversation between sustainable business pioneer, best-selling author and Presidio faculty member Paul Hawken and Presidio President and CEO William Shutkin on cities, soils, biomimicry and the reimagining of sustainability.
This series features world-class entrepreneurs at the leading edge of sustainability and social entrepreneurship in conversation with William Shutkin. Paul Hawken is an environmentalist, entrepreneur, journalist, and author. Starting at age 20, he dedicated his life to sustainability and changing the relationship between business and the environment.
Paul has founded several companies including some of the first natural food companies in the U.S. that relied solely on sustainable agricultural methods. He presently heads OneSun, Inc., an energy company focused on ultra low-cost solar based on green chemistry and biomimicry. He is also founder of the Natural Capital Institute, a research organization located in Sausalito, California. The Natural Capital Institute created Wiser Earth, an open source networking platform that links NGOs, foundations, business, government, social entrepreneurs, students, organizers, academics, activists, scientists, and citizens concerned about the environment and social justice.
In addition to writing articles, op-eds, and peer-reviewed paper, Paul has written seven books including four national bestsellers The Next Economy (Ballantine 1983), Growing a Business (Simon and Schuster 1987), and The Ecology of Commerce (HarperCollins 1993) and Blessed Unrest (Viking, 2007).
William A. Shutkin is the President and CEO of the Presidio Graduate School, where he is also the Richard M. Gray Fellow in Sustainability Practice, and an ex officio board member. An executive, social entrepreneur and academic, he is the author of the award-winning book, The Land That Could Be: Environmentalism and Democracy in the Twenty-First Century, and A Republic of Trees: Field Notes on People, Place and the Planet. He has an AB from Brown University and a JD and MA from the University of Virginia.
