History of the 7th Generation Conference
In 2006 a number of Oklahoma Tribes and the Oklahoma State Department of Health formed a unique collaborative partnership to offer a conference entitled, “Preparing for the 7th Generation.” Native Americans living in Oklahoma suffer greater health disparities than most other people living in this state. The tribes and the state are working together and sharing resources to reduce the leading causes of death and disease among American Indian people living in Oklahoma.
According to Wilma Mankiller, in Iroquois society, leaders are encouraged to remember seven generations in the past and consider seven generations in the future when making decisions that affect the people. As a result, every deliberation of the conference planning committee is considered with this perspective in mind. The primary focus of the committee’s work has been to assist Oklahoma communities to gain knowledge, sharpen their skills and to enhance local advocacy efforts. The tribal/state partnership has been made stronger by these many years of collaboration and committee members have received recognition for this model working relationship.
