Tuesday evenings from:
January 7 - May 27

This is a 15-week course that follows Hebrew for Beginners. The goal of this course is to provide adult beginning students with additional Hebrew reading skills. Students will gain experience in reading prayers from the Shabbat morning service using our JRC Shabbat and Holiday Prayer Book as a text. Topics will include sections from 1) the Shema and its prayers, 2) the Amidah, 3) the Torah Service and 4) the Mourner’s Kaddish. The course will also cover three literary units in the Chumash: 1) the Song at the Sea, 2) the Ten Commandments and 3) the Priestly Blessing. Grammar and pronunciation topics will be included as part of our study of the reading units. The first session will be a review of the Aleph-Bet.
Hebrew for Beginners or equivalent background. Students should be familiar with the entire Aleph-Bet and all vowels. They should additionally understand syllable structure and be able to sound out Hebrew words syllable-by-syllable using references or texts as needed. The course should be helpful to students with a basic knowledge of the Aleph-Bet who want to improve their Hebrew reading skills.
- These dates include 17 class days, to allow for two possible snow-day cancellations. If there are no class cancellations, the course would end on 5/13/2014.
- There will be no class on 2/25/14, 3/4/14, 3/11/14 and 4/15/13 (Pessach).
- Due to conflicting Adult Education lecture Series' classes, the following Tuesday evening Hebrew classes are rescheduled to the Thursday evening of the same week, at the same time as usual, as follows: during the Gender and Feminism and the Torah 3-part series on 2/4, 2/11, 2/18, Hebrew will be held on 2/6, 2/13, 2/20; during the American Jewish Poetry 2-part series on 4/1, 4/8, Hebrew will be held on 4/3, 4/10.
