Description

The PCF is 30 years old this year! With this big milestone, we would like to celebrate with our members and thank you all for being involved in prairie conservation and making the PCF what it is today. We couldn't do the work we do without the support and dedication of the membership. With that said, we invite you to join us for our spring meeting and tour at the Twin Butte Community Centre on June 13 and June 14, 2019. The meeting will start at 1:00 pm on June 13 and go into the evening with a nice supper and some entertainment. We will have updates on all of the current PCF committees, a presentation by Kim Pearson from Waterton Lakes National Park on the work they have been doing since the Kenow wildfire in 2017, and lots of opportunity for member updates. Following the meeting, we will have a chance to kick back and enjoy the company of other PCF members over supper, hear the history of the PCF from our very own Ian Dyson, and watch an amazing First Nations hoop dancer, Sandra LaMouche.

The next day, fo those of you that are able, we will meet at the Ramada hotel parking lot in Pincher Creek at 8:45 am and tour an area of Waterton that was burned during the Kenow wildlfire. Another stop is being planned, however, tour details are still being worked out, so please stay tuned for details! For those that are interested, the Waterton wildflower festival will also be going on from June 13 - 18, 2019.

We will have a donation box set up at the Twin Butte Community Hall on June 13 if you would like to help us pay for the dinner and entertainment. If your organization would like to sponsor any portion of the meeting, tour, or 30 year celebration, please let me know and we will be sure you are recognized. Any help to cover costs would be very much appreciated.

The Prairie Conservation Forum (PCF) exists to promote the conservation of native biodiversity in prairie and parkland environments in Alberta and to provide an ongoing profile for prairie and parkland conservation initiatives.

The Prairie Conservation Forum (originally named the Prairie Conservation Coordinating Committee), was established in 1988 by the Government of Alberta in response to the original Prairie Conservation Action Plan (PCAP). The PCF has grown since its inception, and today is comprised of some fifty member organizations. These organizations represent all three levels of government, non-government organizations, industry, academia, and agricultural and environmental interest groups.

Vision: The biological diversity of native prairie and parkland ecosystems is secure under thoughtful and committed stewardship of all Albertans.

Mission:

The Prairie Conservation Forum is open to all organizations that support and have an interest in achieving the PCAP Vision and who are willing to apply the PCF’s Guiding Principles. The Vision will be achieved by:

  • defining desired biodiversity outcomes and measuring progress towards outcomes;
  • acquiring and sharing data, information and knowledge;
  • advancing understanding and increasing awareness of the native prairie and parkland landscape and its interdependence with the social and economic needs of society;
  • collaborating to enhance the conservation and compatible use of native prairie and parkland landscapes; and
  • maintaining the stability and building the capacity of the Prairie Conservation Forum.
