In collaboration, JustFaith and Ignatian Companions are hosting a Poverty Simulation experience for our program participants and friends of our organizations.
Please join us for an enlightening morning of action and conversation focusing on the reality of poverty and wealth within our Bay Area communities.
The Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS) is a unique tool that StepUp Silicon Valley’s Campaign to Cut Poverty uses to educate everyone, community leaders, politicians, and average folks, about the day-to-day realities of life with a shortage of money and an abundance of stress.
During a simulation, participants role-play the lives of low-income families, from single parents trying to care for their children to senior citizens trying to maintain their self sufficiency on Social Security. The task of each family is to provide food, shelter and other basic necessities during the simulation while interacting with various community
resources staffed by low-income volunteers.
Although it uses "play" money and other props, fictional scenarios, and time limits, the Poverty Simulation is not a game. It is a learning tool that enables participants to view the real world of poverty leading to maximum understanding and future positive action. At the end of the simulation, we will compare everyone’s experience to Santa Clara County statistics and issues, and discuss ways participants can advocate, donate and volunteer to make a real difference.
