Featuring demos, lectures, critiques, and more from some of the most talented portrait and figure artists of the day.

Dine with our favorite artist instructors at our favorite local restaurants during the Private Artist Dinners, featuring creative food and conversation (additional fee required).

 

Portrait & Figure Festival Activities include:

 

  • All Day Artists' Materials & Tools Market, Friday and Saturday from 11:30am to 4:30pm

 

Thursday, October 23: Pre-Festival Events

 

  • 1:30–2:30 pm: Early Bird Event - A special "behind-the-scenes" tour of the Paper Conservation Lab of the National Gallery of Art where curators and conservators investigate the materials and techniques used to create works of art: drawing with charcoal, painting with watercolors, printing with a wood block, or cutting into collages. A great opportunity for artists and art appreciators to add to their understanding of the artist’s creative process. Students will meet up at the West Building, Ground Floor, Room 101. Limited to 12 participants.
  • 1:00–4:00 pm: Early Bird Event - An "insiders" tour of the National Portrait Gallery. The National Portrait Gallery, host of The Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition, is home to a dizzying variety of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video and other time-based media. Students will meet up at the Gallery's entrance at 750 Ninth Street, NW, Washington, DC. Exact Tour time TBA. Limited to 20 participants.
  • 2:00–3:00 pm: Early Bird Event - A "special viewing" of the Graphics Art Storage of the National Gallery of Art. A great opportunity for artists and art appreciators to have rare access to Old Master figure and portrait works from the gallery's print and drawing collection. Students will meet up at the library, located in the East Building of the National Gallery, at Fourth Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC. Limited to 12 participants.

 

Friday, October 24: Festival Begins

 

  • 9:30–11:30 am: Master Demo with Danni Dawson
  • 9:30–11:30 am: Individual portfolio review and/or coaching with Michael Grimaldi, Ephraim Rubenstein or Costa Vavagiakis. 15 minute sessions for individual portfolio review and/or coaching.
  • 11:45am–1:00 pm: Opening Keynote with Panel Discussion by Danni Dawson, Rob Liberace, and Dan Thompson- led by Ted Reed. (Lunch is available onsite to be paid in person.)
  • 1:15–3:15 pm: Break out individual sessions including Michael Grimaldi, Sharon Sprung and Rick Weaver.
    • Anatomical, Morphological, and Biomechanical Approaches to the Figure (Grimaldi)
    • The Features of the Face: Eyes, Nose & Lips (Sprung)
    • The Emotive Portrait in Clay (Weaver)
  • 3:30–4:00 pm: Innovator Talks with Joe Mullins, Scott Hutchison and Thanasi Papapostolou.
    • Facial Reconstruction for the Artist (Mullins)
    • Animation: the Portrait in Motion (Hutchison)
    • Greek Revival: Re-envisioned (Papapostolou)
  • 4:15–6:15 pm: Break out sessions including Michael Grimaldi, Robert Liberace, and Paul Lucchesi.
    • Curvilinear Perspective: Theoretical & Practical Adaptations to Interpretation of Space (Grimaldi)
    • Form and Function: Painting the Torso (Liberace)
    • Sculpture The Figure: Capturing Individuality through Technique, Anatomy & Expression (Lucchesi)
  • 4:30–6:30 pm: Individual portfolio reviews and/or coaching with Sharon Sprung, Dan Thompson or Rick Weaver. 15 minutes sessions for individual portfolio review and/or coaching.
  • 7:00–8:30 pm: Presenter Exhibit Reception at The Art League Gallery in the Torpedo Factory Art Center with book signings and featured artists.

 

Saturday, October 25: Festival Day Two

 

  • 9:00–11:00 am: Master Demo with Robert Liberace, Ted Reed, Kurt Schwarz and Dan Thompson (2 models)
  • 10:00–11:00 am: Individual portfolio reviews and/or coaching with Danni Dawson, Ephraim Rubenstein or Sharon Sprung. 15 minutes sessions for individual portfolio review and/or coaching.
  • 11:15am–1:15 pm: Break out individual sessions including Jackie Saunders, Costa Vavagiakis and Rick Weaver
    • Figurative Gesture in Ink (Saunders)
    • Toned Method: toned paper & drawing instruments for fast portraits (Vavagiakis)
    • The Emotive Portrait in Clay (Weaver)
  • 1:30–2:00 pm: Innovator Talks with David Carter, Danni Dawson, Paul Lucchesi, and Steve Prince
    • Optics & Art: the Figure in Perspective (Carter)
    • Sharing Creative Process & Partnership (Dawson & Lucchesi)
    • Narratives in Portrait That Emote (Prince)
  • 2:15–4:15 pm: Break out individual sessions including Ephraim Rubenstein, Lisa Semerad and Sharon Sprung
    • The Figure in Pastel: a Bridge between Drawing & Painting (Rubenstein)
    • Expressing the Portrait & Figure in non-traditional media (Semerad)
    • The Features of the Face: Eyes, Nose & Lips (Sprung)
  • 3:15–4:15 pm: Innovator Presentation by painter, influential framer, and master gilder Bill Adair: “Reframing the Conversation”
  • 2:00–4:00 pm: Individual portfolio reviews and/or coaching with Robert Liberace, Danni Dawson or Costa Vavagiakis. 15 minutes sessions for individual portfolio review and/or coaching.
  • 4:30–6:30 pm: Break out individual sessions including Steve Prince, Kurt Schwarz, and Dan Thompson
    • Expressive Figure in Linocut (Prince)
    • Figure in Oil Sketch (Schwarz)
    • Portrait in Red Chalk (Thompson)
  • 7:00–9:00 pm: Private Artist Dinners in Alexandria restaurants. Additional fee & registration required.

FAQs

 

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

Individuals must be 16 or older to participate. Those under the age of 18 need parental permission to attend.

Where can I stay during the Portrait & Figure Festival?

A block of 30 rooms has been reserved across the street at the Crowne Plaza Hotel at 901 North Fairfax St, Alexandria, VA 22314. Participants receive a discounted rate of $129 single/double occupancy per night + tax. To receive this discount, please use the code "BCP" when booking your room online. What are my transport/parking options getting to the Portrait & Figure Festival?

Metro: Take the Yellow or Blue Line to the King Street Station; then take the Alexandria Dash Bus #2 or #5, eastbound to the Madison and North Fairfax Street intersection.

Parking: Metered as well as free street parking is available at the Madison Annex. Paid parking lots are located at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and at the Colonial Parking lot located off of Montgomery Street behind the Sport and Health.

What can/can't I bring to the event?

Participants may watch or work along during the "Break Out" sessions. Work may be done in oil, watercolor, pastel, or other drawing material. Low fire clay is available for purchase onsite. If you choose to work in oil, only bring odorless paint thinners such as Turpenoid, please. We are sorry but you can not bring unregistered attendees (this includes spouses, friends, children or pets).

What is the cancellation/refund policy?

Participants must cancel by September 15, 2014. No refunds will be issued after September 15, 2014. There is a non-refundable registration fee of $50. The Save My Spot ticket is non-refundable. What is the Save My Spot Ticket?

The Save My Spot ticket is an option for those who want to save a spot to participate in the Portrait & Figure Festival, but would like to pay in installments. To hold your spot, participants will pay a $165 non-refundable deposit. The participant will be sent an invoice for $170 to be paid before October 17, 2014, totaling the $335.
