From Longley to LePage:
An Insider's Take on Maine's Budget Process
The Honorable H. Sawin Millett, Jr.
Administrative and Financial Services, State of Maine
Every year, Maine state government spends more than $3 billion, and the biannual negotiation over the state's budget is one of the most important -- and mysterious -- aspects of state government.
There's a reason the Legislature's Appropriations Committee is referred to as the "powerful" budget-writing committee. Budgets set major policies and determine how much funding state agencies will receive, whether or not schools will see an increase in funding, and how many matching federal dollars will flow into the state.
Please join The Maine Heritage Policy Center and the Honorable H. Sawin Millet, Jr. for a discussion about the financial hurdles awaiting Maine's taxpayers, Legislature, and Governor in the days ahead.
Millett, through his work in state government, has seen more budget negotiations unfold than perhaps any other public servant in Maine's history. He has served in the administrations of four different governors (Longley, McKernan, King and LePage) and retired from public service on May 30, 2014. In 2011, a Bangor Daily News poll ranked Millett as one of the most influential people in Maine politics.
