Pop-up Britex: Draping with Karolyn Kiisel
Thursday, September 19, 2013 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM (PDT)
San Francisco, CA
San Francisco, California
London, United Kingdom
Designer, teacher, and author of Draping: The Complete Course, Karolyn Kiisel will demonstrate draping techniques with muslin on a dress form. Draping rather than flat pattern drafting is an effective and creative start to the fashion design because shapes organically emerge. Focusing on Audrey Hepburn’s iconic bateau-neck sheath dress in the film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” Kiisel will also explore the subjective elements of draping such as, expressing mood and tone, and communicating an attitude.
Designers always strive for a signature look. Kiisel will offer insights into how draping can help designers identify and express a distinctive personal style.
About the Instructor
Karolyn Kiisel has taught in fashion for over 20 years at Otis College of Art & Design and Woodbury University. Her book Draping: The Complete Course has just been released. Her fashion designs have been sold at fine retailers, such as, Barney’s, and Bergdorf Goodman, and they have also appeared on the red carpet and graced the cover of Women’s Wear Daily. A graduate of UC Berkeley, her costume designs have appeared widely on screen and stage. Recent designs for orchestras and opera soloists include those worn by the Los Angeles Master Chorale. Currently, her spacious downtown LA loft serves as a lively local resource, utilized as a workshop for costume designers and as a fashion event space.
When & Where
A San Francisco landmark since 1952, Britex is a must-visit for designers, sewers, do-it-yourself-ers and anyone seeking creative inspiration. The four-story, family-run store contains fabrics, laces, ribbons, notions and buttons from around the world.
With our workshops and tours, we hope to encourage our local makers to make well and be proud of their designs. It is also our goal to be a point of social connection and educational resource for San Francisco Bay Area designers, businesses and fabric lovers.
