Living in Southern California it’s hard to not notice the majestic San Gabriel Mountains. This wild area is comprised of 532,000 acres of forests and mountains, with several peaks that rise over 9,000 feet. The dramatic mountains, majestic forests and clear rivers provide one-third of Los Angeles County's drinking water and recreation opportunities for over 17 million people.
Representative Judy Chu and local leaders are working to protect the San Gabriel Mountains through legislation, but gridlock in Congress has prevented the region from receiving the timely protections it deserves.
Fortunately, we have a new opportunity to permanently protect our beloved San Gabriel Mountains.
The Obama administration is holding a community meeting about the future of the San Gabriels to explore opportunities for enhancing access, recreational use and protection of scenic, cultural and historic areas of interest in the mountains. We should tell the Administration to designate this magnificent place as a national monument. This would begin fulfilling the vision of permanently protecting the San Gabriel Mountains, improving the visitor experience, and increasing community access. It’s vital we show strong support for a national monument by packing the meeting with hundreds of supporters.
