Event Details

Politics, Advocacy & Political Careers for Girls begins with a lesson on the structure of the US political system at the federal and state levels. The session then examines the contributions of women political leaders beginning with Jeannette Rankin and moving through to present-day leaders. The advocacy portion of the session defines advocacy, the ways one can effectively advocate and the role of advocacy in political as well as social change. The program concludes with Political Careers for Girls as participants learn about the myriad professional opportunities for women in the political sector. Guest speakers for this portion of the program include a lobbyist, campaign manager, Chief of Staff, political fundraiser, political speech writer, PAC director and field organizer. This program is intended for girls ages 14 to 17.

Girl Scouts participating in this workshop will earn Skill Building badges. Cadettes will create a political ad to earn the Digital Movie Maker badge. Seniors will work with a web designer to create her own political campaign website to earn the Web Designer badge. For those participants interested in enhancing their experience they may complete a 4 hour-volunteer shift with an advocacy organization or the office of an elected official. GIP will secure the volunteer opportunities ahead of the workshop. Participants may pick their volunteer assignment at the end of the session and a GIP Program Director will oversee the activity in coordination with the participant's parent from start to finish. All participants will recieve a Certicate of Completion at the end of the session.
