3D Printing on the Replicator 2, MAR_2015
- Hobbies & Special Interest
- Make It Labs, Nashua
This workshop will teach basic operation of the CNC Plasma cutter. A CNC Plasma cutter is a computer-controlled machine that cuts sheet metal and plate metal. It will take in a 2D design (.dxf) and cut the geometry you have designed in mild steel, aluminum, or stainless steel from 26-gauge (0.5mm thick) up to 1/2" thick plate.
We will go over all of the basic needs for operation of the equipment. By the end of the session each attendee will have learned the following skills:
- Safety and theory behind the Plasma cutter and CNC machine
- How to draw simple shapes and modify them in the PlasmaCAM software
- How to import an existing 2D DXF design from other CAD software into the PlasmaCAM software
- How to set up the machine for the type and thickness of metal
- How to perform test cuts
- How to position your design on the metal
- How to burn out the design
- Deburring of part to remove slag left from the cutting process
- Clean up of machine
You will also learn some of the limitations of the plasma cutting machine and how to plan for them in your design.
The cost of the class includes the mild steel from which we will cut some small parts. Special project material needs should be communicated at least a week before the workshop.
Use of the Plasma CNC after this class requires that you to purchase your own “consumable items” (e.g. Electrode, Nozzle, Shield Cup). You can purchase these items on your own, or through MakeIt Labs at cost - these will be yours to keep, manage, and re-use on the Plasma CNC.
Class participants are required to have closed toe shoes, non-polyester clothing, a long sleeve shirt and long pants.
