Plant Seed Garden near Longmont
May 9th, 4-7pm
Since spring 2012, staff has been working on a project to grow native seeds, collected by volunteers, in a local agricultural setting for future increase and collection! As many of you know, we currently pay contractors (other government agencies) to do this work for us in other parts of the Southwest US, but this is our first try at doing it ourselves, here in Boulder County. As you can imagine, this is a lot of work, and we'll be relying on the help of volunteers and the Youth Corps to make it all happen!
Last summer, staff and volunteers planted 3200 plugs of blue flax and blanketflower plants. There are still empty beds, and this year we will be adding 1200 plugs of yellow coneflower, aka Mexican hat, seen in the photo below. There may also be some work weeding and maintaining the beds.
Sign up now for this project, and keep your eyes peeled for future opportunities to maintain the area by pulling weeds, then eventually to harvest the seed in summer and fall 2013!
We will be working on an agricultural property near Ollin Farms, just on the south edge of Longmont. Driving directions will be provided in a reminder email a few days before the project.
