Runners geeking out.  Math geeks on the run.
Everyone running pi for PIE!!

The typical 5K of 3.1 miles is so old-school. This Pi K is sooo much better because MATH means it's a 3.14-mile run. Or trot, saunter, walk, skip or strut. (Yes, we know Pi K technically means 3.14 kilometers, and you can go that distance. But "Pi K" just rhymes better than "3 point 1 4 mile run" so don't be persnickety with us.)

Start the spring season off right with a Pi K Fun Run! March 14, or 3.14, is celebrated internationally in honor of the math constant pi. This year it's got two more digits of pi -- 3.14.15! In case you've forgotten your high school geometry lesson, this unique, indefinite number is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. Illinois Science Council, a Chicago nonprofit promoting science and math, teams up with Fleet Feet Sports to honor the importance of pi and running in our lives with a Pi Day Pi K 3.14 mile fun run.

Date:  Saturday, March 14, 2015

Start Time: 9:26:53am for 10 pi digits - 3.141592653!

Locations - 4 options:

Fleet Feet Sports - Old Town, 1620 N. Wells St., Chicago, 60614

Fleet Feet Sports - Lincoln Square, 4762 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago, 60625

Fleet Feet Sports - South Loop, 150 W. Roosevelt Rd., Chicago, 60605

Fleet Feet Sports - Elmhurst, 124 Schiller St., Elmhurst, 60126

Post Run Pi(e) Parties: Immediately following the run, back at Fleet Feet Sports stores, there will be a party with pie, beverages and games with prizes (prizes are for mental ability, not run times).

SPECIAL DEAL:

March 14 also happens to be Albert Einstein's birthday! No kidding. In his honor if (and only IF) your name is Albert, Alberta, Albertina or Alberts, you can get $5 off your registration. (Nooo, Allen, Allan, Alex or Allesandra does not count. Although the actual name Einstein would.) You will have to prove it with ID. If you show up on the 14th and are not so appropriately named, you will be fined $3.14, have to run backwards the whole route, and people will call you "Einstein" but not in a positive way.

IMPORTANT INFO:

Capacity is neither uncertain nor irrational. This event has limited capacity at each venue that cannot be increased. That means: 314 people at Old Town location, 157 people (1/2 Pi) each at the Lincoln Square and South Loop locations, and 50 people at the Elmhurst store. So register early and check to BE SURE TO CHOOSE YOUR DESIRED LOCATION. There will be no changing of locations even if you beg, "Oh, please, please, I made a mistake and my friend and I registered at different locations but we really, really want to run together." Sorry, no exceptions. (Well, if you make a sizable tax deductible donation to ISC, then we'll talk.)

To participate in the run YOU MUST REGISTER in ADVANCE. There will be no walk-ups (or run-ups) and NO day of registration. If you are not on our list by 6:00pm March 13, you will not get in. That's just how this pie rolls.

You do not have to run the course, walking is certainly allowed (and jogging, trotting and skipping) but no baby joggers, strollers, bikes, skates or pets. Children are allowed but anyone under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Costumes are allowed and encouraged (if clever). Gear check will be provided. There is no packet or number pick up prior to the run; you'll get the t-shirt when you check in.
There are no refunds for this event.

T-shirt - awesome Pi Day Pi K Run t-shirt will be given to each registered runner. It is available in women's and men's small, medium, large and x-large sizes.

All event proceeds benefit the work of Illinois Science Council, an independent 501c3 nonprofit organization promoting science, technology, engineering and math to the public.

Pi, in case you don't remember, is abbreviated to 3.14 but continues indefinitely. To date, it has been calculated by computer to over 1.2 trillion digits. Competitions exist for reciting the most digits by memory. As the world's most famous mathematical constant, Pi is important to many formulas used in mathematics, science, engineering and statistics.

Illinois Science Council

Illinois Science Council ("ISC") is an independent 501c3 organization that engages, educates, and entertains the adult public about science, technology, engineering and math in our everyday lives. We showcase the scientists and research of Chicago-area institutions and companies that make Chicago our nation's true "City of Science." ISC is the science & tech complement to the myriad of arts & culture outreach available to the lay public.

We are inspired and motivated by this Carl Sagan quote: “The brain is like a muscle. When it is in use we feel very good. Understanding is joyous." Sagan also observed, "We live in a society that is exquisitely dependent upon science and technology in which hardly anyone understands anything about science and technology." ISC is certainly working to change that.

ISC explores all areas of science and technology and we do it with a fun, non-stuffy approach.  We don't care what's been forgotten since school (or never learned in the first place). It's simply about continuing to exercise our inexhaustible human sense of curiosity. We create engaging programs open to the public (aimed at adults and accessible to teens) to exercise people's innate human curiosity.
