Event Details

Photography has more to do with how you see the world around you and what you choose to focus on than the camera you use to capture it or the settings you had it on. Something catches your eye, your body moves the camera into position and the the shutter snaps. If you've ever watched Curly argue with a bowl of oyster stew, you know much can be communicated without saying a word. The last time you took your camera out, what did you see and what did you say?

Taking your photography to what ever "next level" there is takes fluency in the visual language. It's a language where color, emotion, story and light come together in very beautiful ways. I wish I could tell you that signing up for one of my Photo Foursome Sunrise Shoots will make you a visual poet, but photography like any passion, craft or art takes time and practice. The Wax On, Wax Off, Paint The Fence and taking thousands of practice shots that never see the light of day because they were just a little "under seasoned" plays a big part, but it can be done and it's worth every minute of that journey should you embark on it. The basics start with learning how to go from looking at what's around you to seeing what's there. In essence, changing your point of view or how you look at what you see. This is the part of photography that sees a reflection in a pond instead of just another Monday morning drive to work. This is the part that sees the way the colors are playing together in a fall afternoon, not trees by the roadside. It's also the part of photography that, if you listen carefully you might be lucky enough to hear the muse on the wind as she whispers in your ear. It's also the part that has learned over time to humbly get out of my own way and let the landscape speak for itself.

Learning to see what it is about a scene that made you pick up your camera is the first step and the good news is, it's pretty easy to learn, can be a lot of fun and takes much less time. Whether you're tired of taking pictures you're not happy with, curious about all of the "visual language' talk we photographers through around, or an experienced shooter looking to find that elusive, "next level" join me as I lead Photography Foursome Sunrise Shoots this Spring and Summer. In addition to the increased attention I can give each photographer, the small size and limited number of vehicles will make getting to and from/in and out of the little spots and hide a way places I like to go and those I want to go. That's the benefit of living and shooting lots of pictures in and around Gettysburg. Photography is fun, social and all about seeing the world a little differently. In a few hours, with new friends and some good light, I can change the way you see the world. Really, getting you "conversational" in a new language shouldn't be hard after that.

I can't think of a better way to explore the landscape that ranges from backdrop of daily life, to, defining point in a nation's history, depending on your point of view. Mine is that there is beauty to be found wherever we look for it, you can never have too many smiles, there is no fill line on laughter and you can't have enough great relationships in your life. I'm Jerry and I'd love to help show you how to make the most of the pictures you are going to take home and share with the world.

How many photographers will be at each Photo Foursome Sunrise Shoot, how much does it cost and what does my money buy me?

Each Photo Foursome is limited to 4 tickets. Each single ticket costs $300. Each Photo Foursome ticket is a "Golden Ticket" allowing the holder to attend the Photo 101 and Group Walk for no additional charge.  That's right, you have a chance to learn how to use your camera, in the Photo 101 class, make new photogrpahy friends on the Tuesday morning Group Walk plus everything in the Photo Foursome for only $300.  Learning how to use your camera and compose a great picture shouldn't take your whole vacation or vacation dollar.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

Parking areas will be determined based on where we will be taking pictures which will vary in location. Location and parking information will be distributed to attendees prior to each shoot No transportation will be provided.

What can/can't I bring to the event?

Bring your camera! Having a basic knowledge of manual camera or at least being comfortable with Shutter and Aperture Priority settings helps. If you are uncomfortable with your camera's manual settings, please sign up for one of my Photo 101 classes. A decent tripod is always a good idea. Many pictures can't be taken without one, but remember, don't bring more than you want to carry. These Photography Foursomes will be held rain or shine, so prepare accordingly.

Will we be shooting on the Battlefield?

Probably, but we won't necessarily be starting there.  National Park Service rules state the battlefield is closed until 6am.  There are several spots I've been scouting that we can shoot until it opens.  Depending on weather conditions, preference of foursome members, whim of the photographer or change of light the details are subject to change, but will always be communicated with participants prior to the shoot. The only other thing besides your printed ticket is an open mind and a willingness to see things a little differently than you're used to looking at them. Many pictures can't be taken with out that either. Just remember, don't bring anything you aren't willing to lug/quick trip down the road.

Do I need to have a dSLR?

No, just bring the camera you have, dSLR, point and shoot or even phone. Many point and shoot cameras have the capability of changing the settings we will be discussing and the compositional rules involved in photography basics are still important to those shooting with their phone. That being said, you've never seen a mule win the Kentucky Derby. It just doesn't have the right parts. Any shot can be seen but not every device can capture every image. Your choices on how to capture what you see may be limited, but you don't need a fancy camera to learn to see it.

Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?

If you have any questions, please email: mayihelpyou@jerrygilbertphotography.com

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Yes, you will need to bring your printed ticket. There will be only 4 tickets available for each Photography Foursome. Your ticket will be scanned for admittance to the group and will be needed for access to the Photo 101 class and the Group Photo Walk.

Do I have to buy a ticket to the other events I want to attend?

No, just bring your Photo Foursome Ticket with you to the other events.

Will Jerry be taking pictures?

Yes and No. My job during a Photography Foursome is to help teach you to see the world differently while interacting with and making new friends from all over the world. If that means I need to take a few pictures to demonstrate a concept and show you why I picked up my camera, then that's what I'll do.

Can you really change how I see the world in a matter of a few hours?

Ye of little Faith.
