Fear of buttons, dials and numbers associated with modern cameras have left many a novice shooter at the mercy of "Auto" mode for way too long. Cameras are getting more and more sophistocated, not to mention expensive, but fewer and fewer people actually know how to use them. If you peel back the layers of technological advancement, the same basic camera use and physics regarding how an image is exposed hasn't changed much. The best part is that those concepts are easy to learn. If you have ever wondered what people mean by 18% gray and don't know your ISO from your f-stop, I'd love to help you!
Join me, outdoor and nature photographer, Jerry Gilbert in a Photo 101 class on Monday nights from 6-9pm, in the "Go Too" Room above the Garryowen Irish Pub in beautiful downtown Gettysburg. This is a small group, casual, environment designed to help teach the basics of camera use and composition. We'll go over what the ISO, shutter spead and aperture are and how they work together to give you the picture you see, not the one the camera thinks you might be looking at.
For all of the dials and buttons, cameras really are simple boxes. Whether you are a local photographer looking to stretch your wings outside the Green Box and Auto settings to the tourist wanting to know how to use the camera they brought to Gettysburg, join me for Photo 101 in the Go Too Room at the Garryowen Irish Pub. Why not start your week by learning how to use your camera, having a pint and meet other photography enthusiasts from all over the world!
What does the class cost?
What would you expect to pay for all of this? $200 a ticket? $150 a ticket? $100 a ticket? Ladies and gentlemen you get all of this, 3 hours in a pub, learning to use your camera, the chance to meet and greet other photography enthusiasts from all around the world, not to mention the face time with your's truly for the "get 'em while they last" low price of $85 each.
Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?
This class is being held in the upstairs "Go Too" room of the Garryowen Irish Pub. There will be appetizers served during the class and drinks may be purchased at the bar below according to their age and ID requirements. There is not an age requirement to attend the class, just an interest and willingness to learn how to use a camera.
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
The Garryowen is a short block and a half walk from the square of Gettysburg. Parking may be tight but available along Chambersburg and other side streets as well as public parking areas in town.
What can/can't I bring to the event?
Bring your printed ticket, your camera and it's instruction manual if you have one. If you wish to purchase a tasty Irish pint at the bar downstairs with which to enjoy during the class, appetizers and meeting of new friends you will no doubt need to bring your photo ID. Non alcoholic beverages will of course be available as well.
Do I need to have a dSLR?
No, just bring the camera you have, dSLR, point and shoot or even phone. Many point and shoot cameras have the capability of changing the settings we will be discussing and the compositional rules involved in photography basics are still important to those shooting with their phone.
Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?
If you have any questions, please email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
Yes, you will need to bring your printed ticket. As space is limited in the "Go Too" Room lickets are limited as well. Your ticket will be scanned for admittance to the class upstairs.
