Event Details

We all take more photos of children than of any other subject - but we can make them much, much better with planning for the activity, the light, and the camera settings.

This one-day workshop starts at noon, with a couple of hours of planning and practicing: we will cover capturing children candidly or engaging them directly with the camera; the quality of soft vs. hard light, the direction of the light, and the use of reflectors; and the best camera settings for more effectively focusing attention on the child.

At 2PM we will move to a nearby park, and start photographing children, working in small groups, and rotating locations, that everyone has a chance to photograph different children in different activities.

By 4PM we'll be back in the classroom, reviewing the images made, and discussing what approaches worked best! We are counting on participants to either bring their own children, or to ask friends to bring their children - they will be rewarded with all the successful images made of each child! The privacy of the children will be fully respected, with clear agreements to be signed by all participants.

An email with links to top child photographers' sites will be sent to each participant beforehand, and a private web gallery of the best images will be posted online, within a week of the workshop. Participants should have an advanced command of their DSLR camera, in order to concentrate on the content of their photographs. Bring additional memory cards and spare batteries, as well as any fixed- focal-length lens you have!

Instructor Bio: George Simian is a commercial photographer and educator, who photographs children for use in corporate annual reports, as well as for his personal projects. His images of children are strikingly engaging, with the children's true personalities encourage to emerge, using modern photographic techniques to focus attention on the child while still describing their natural environment. To see them, visit his web site www.GeorgeSimian.com

Requirements:
Please bring your camera, notebook, and pen. Be sure that your camera battery is charged and that you have a memory card with plenty of room on it for photos.

Of course, we are counting on some of you to bring your own children, or to invite your close friends or relatives to bring theirs! If your kids (or your friends with their kids) are coming, have them meet us in the park, at 2PM. We'll be done by 4PM, in order to return to the classroom, and review a sample of the images, and discuss what worked, and what issues need more attention!

The payoff will be a set of beautiful new images for the parents - the children will be photographed in a park behind LACMA, in a very relaxed and non-demanding atmosphere, with the parents' presence and participation! Wouldn't it be great to have a new set of photos of your kids, made by several very motivated and happy photographers (that'd be you, the participants)

We'll arrange for the best resulting images to be distributed back to the parents, as compensation for providing us models! The privacy of the children will be fully respected, with clear agreements to be signed by all participants.
