The Philadelphia City Controller serves as the chief fiscal officer of our city, the head of the Auditing Department and the financial watchdog for other city officials. The Controller also plays key roles in the School District, Philadelphia Gas Works, bond issues, the Housing Authority and the Board of Pensions and Retirement.
This year, Philadelphians will elect a City Controller to keep an eye on city finances for the next four years. In the hottest election in the city, Brett Mandel and Mark Zecca have challenged Incumbent Controller Alan Butkovitz in the May 21 Democratic Primary. The winner will face Republican Terry Tracy in November.
As young Philadelphians, we are disproportionately impacted by city finances. The debts, bonds, and investments undertaken in the next four years will shape the future of this city for decades to come.
That's why Young Involved Philadelphia is proud to partner with WHYY and the Committee of Seventy to host a debate between all four candidates. For one evening, the next City Controller will hear directly from us and speak directly to our concerns.
Join us from 6:30-8:00pm on April 11 at WHYY to learn about this crucial job and the individuals seeking it. Admission is free, but you must RSVP via Eventbrite to get in. Once you've signed up, start thinking about the questions you have for these candidates - we'll be in touch soon to get your thoughts.
