Gal Luft, Co-director, Institute for the Analysis of Global Security; Co-author, Petropoly

The country's energy paradigm is caught between the slogans of “drill-baby-drill” and “oil is evil.” The real problem arguably is that the global oil market is controlled by the OPEC cartel that artificially fixes prices. That could explain why oil prices continue to rise even though the United States, the world’s largest petroleum consumer, is producing more and consuming less. Alternative fuels advocates say the only way that will change is there are other fuels that can compete and give consumers choice for the first time since the early days of the automobile. What role will EVs, ethanol and other alternative fuels play in creating a competitive market for transportation fuels? Can emissions reductions be met along the way? Join a conversation on energy markets and how environmentalists and U.S. politicians might be misguided in their calls to get off foreign oil.
