PREREQUISITES: All participants must complete the required home study prior to attending this course. There are no required course pre-requisites for this course.
This course is the first of three courses, Pelvic PT 1, Pelvic PT2, and Pelvic PT 3, designed to give the practicing clinician a comprehensive knowledge base in pelvic physical therapy evaluation and treatment. Successful completion of testing will result in a Certificate of Completion of Pelvic PT 2. Successful completion of Pelvic PT1, Pelvic PT 2, and Pelvic PT 3 will result in a Brooks Certificate of Academic Achievement in Pelvic Physical Therapy (Brooks Pelvic-CAAPP).
This 2-day competency based course provides physical therapists with practical knowledge and skill in the treatment of female urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Required home study prior to attending the course will prepare the participant for an intensive live interactive instructional experience. Instruction in pelvic floor muscle function, anatomy, physiology and pelvic floor muscle dysfunction will provide the clinician with skills for immediate clinical application and build the base for future courses. This course is the first in a series of three courses designed to give the practicing clinician a comprehensive knowledge base in pelvic physical therapy treatment. Course content is evidence based, and will promote the use of the most reliable tests and validated outcomes measures. Instruction in vaginal examination of the pelvic floor is a key component of this course. Participants will perform and experience intra-vaginal EMG biofeedback, vaginal weights, and electrical stimulation.
1. All participants will describe describe normal anatomy and function of the rectal pelvic floor including basics of defecation.
2. All participants will list components of the medical investigation of rectal function.
3. All participants will describe the pathophysiology of constipation, vulvodynia, vaginismus, painful bladder syndrome including interstitial cystitis, abdominal muscle dysfunction, and abdominal wall nerve entrapments.
4. Physical Therapists will perform examination and evaluation of the abdominal wall and of the pelvic floor vaginally and rectally.
5. Physical Therapists will differentiate between potential mechanisms of pelvic pain.
6. Physical Therapists will develop appropriate plan of care and functional goals for each of the above listed dysfunctions.
7. All participants will develop strategies for treatment of pelvic pain syndromes and constipation.
8. Physical Therapists will perform myofascial release and trigger point release to the pelvic floor muscles externally, vaginally, and rectally.
9. Physical Therapists will perform scar and myofascial release techniques to the abdominal muscles.
Physical Therapists and physical therapist assistants (PTAs) who are accompanied by a physical therapist colleague may attend this course. Instruction in examination techniques and treatment skills is a key component of this course. PTAs may observe the examination and manual therapy labs and/or participate as a simulated patient. Participants will be tested before, throughout, and after the course to demonstrate learning and obtain a course certificate.

EXPECTATIONS OF PARTICIPANTS
- Participants are expected to complete the required home study prior to the course.All home study materials will be e-mailed to participants upon registration. All participants will be tested on the home study.
- All participants are expected to participate in all testing during the course. Participant who do not pass testing but attend the entire course will be granted a Certificate of Attendance. Participants who pass the testing and attend the entire course will receive a Certificate of Completion.
- Participants must be prepared to fully engage in the interactive labs in this course. Please come prepared to participate as both clinician and patient. Male or female participants, who cannot, for any reason, participate as lab subjects need to provide their own lab partners. Pregnant participants must bring a signed permission note from her physician to participate.
- This course DOES include internal (intra-vaginal or intra-rectal) pelvic floor lab work.
- Participants are expected to stay through the entire course in order to receive the most benefit from the course, and to earn all of the CEUs for the course. Anyone needing to miss more than one hour will have the number of CEUs altered on his or her Certificate , and may need to make up work in order to obtain a Certificate of Completion ( at the instructor’s discretion)
