Dr. Kenneth B. Kurica grew up in New Jersey, working for his Father as a short-order cook, surrounded by sports including: surfing, skiing, football, competitive swimming and golf. One of his first business ventures was acquisition of the country club restaurant at 16, which ultimately paid for college and medical school. A passion for powder skiing led him to Colorado and a residency in general surgery as well as meeting his wife of 31 years, Marty, a registered nurse. Ultimately, he returned to Boston and the hard blue ice of New England skiing. An appointment as a Clinical Fellow in Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School , followed by two Fellowships in Complex Spinal Surgery in London and Paris. He then moved back to Colorado Springs in 1986 where he practiced Orthopaedic and Spine surgery for over twenty years. He promoted and founded the merger of three local Orthopaedic groups to form the Colorado Spring Orthopaedic Group in 1994, where he served as Managing Partner for six years and then Chairman of the Executive committee. He led the real estate development of two medical campuses; Medical Center Pointe in the early 1990s and then Audubon Medical Center in 2000. One of the first Spine Surgery Centers of Excellence was established at Audubon with the creation a physical and ‘virtual’ patient educational center called Spine University (www.spineuniversity.com).
In 2000, as an effort to reduce surgical complications, Dr. Kurica created a telemedicine company, PRN Read, P.C. providing Professional Neurology interpretation services via the internet (www.prnread.com). This company allowed for a “Virtual Neurologist “ to be present during complex surgical procedures, providing support for the patient, surgeon and the monitoring technicians within Operating Room. PRN Read currently supports over 150 hospitals in 22 states with 12 contracted physicians.
Dr. Kurica retired in 2006 and founded IntraNerve, LLC (a complementary company to PRN Read, P.C.), which provides Technical neurophysiological testing for patients in the operating room undergoing brain, spinal, vascular and ENT surgical procedures (www.intranerve.com). IntraNerve currently provides services in 10 states (including Colorado) in support of over 200 surgeons and 85 facilities. Currently, new fields of interest are establishing a separate telemedicine branch, providing Continuous Electroencephalography (cEEG) in the Intensive Care Units to better treat patients who are unconscious or having seizure disorders.
Of course, after 50 years of skiing, he suffered a grade 3 MCL and ACL tear in Blue Sky Basin at Vail 6 weeks ago in over a foot of powder! Dr. Kurica and Marty are also awaiting their first grandchild and enjoy spending time with their three children – Tyler, Laura, and Stephanie – who are all involved in the medical field, currently residing in Iowa, Colorado, and California.
