Event Details

For many, the urge to engage in Hair Pulling, Skin Picking and related Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs) is overwhelming. It can seem one has little or no choice in responding to these urges. Family members often feel profound distress, as they don’t know how to help their loved ones, or address their own feelings about the problem.

Christina Pearson, TLC’s Founder, and a longtime, well-esteemed national advocate for more research and better treatment, has 17 years of strong picking/pulling recovery herself. Christina is a graduate of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction teacher’s practicum.

The presentation will cover recent scientific research findings and identify emerging treatment trends. With focused, interactive, experiential exercises, both sufferers and family members will develop new perspectives and learn concrete strategies that help reduce unwanted behaviors and the hyper-focused awareness of them, enhancing life overall.

Workshop attendees are also invited to attend the 20th Anniversay of THEO Support Group on Sunday, March 3. Details are provided below!

This workshop is appropriate for ages 14 and older. Please call for more details.

Lunch provided by The OCD Foundation of Michigan,

A prolific advocate for raising public awareness & creating better access to effective treatment, Christina facilitated bringing together the world’s leading researchers and clinicians in order to develop a more comprehensive understanding of hair pulling and skin picking problems. She has designed a series of workshops for those who seek useful tools to aid recovery, and presents regularly at conferences, workshops, and retreats around the country. She has worked with thousands struggling with compulsive hair pulling and skin picking.

"Christina is phenomenal! She has a unique gift for relating complex information in a fun, inspirational manner. I feel empowered and the burden of my shame has been vastly diminished. This experience was invaluable." -TLC Workshop Attendee

SESSION ONE   10:00 –11:00 am

IDENTIFYING OBSTACLES:“If I don’t see it, how can I overcome it?”
After introductions, we will identify patterns of thought & behavior that create/maintain resistance to healthy change. A few simple - yet profound - exercises will be practiced, highlighting roadblocks to recovery, and what steps could address these obstacles. The goal of this session is to “put on a new pair of glasses,” allowing a dynamic shift in how we perceive BFRBs and their treatment. A critical building-block of solid recovery is learning how to transform obstacles into opportunities.

SESSION TWO     11:00 –12:00noon

BRIEF OVERVIEW: Emerging Scientific Research & Effective Treatment Approaches

This session will briefly outline what is known about how BFRBs work, what is normal/typical, what may cause them, how they affect people's lives, and how they are treated. Next, scientific research findings in neuroscience, genetics, and psychology will be presented, highlighting emerging effective treatment trends in both cognitive behavioral therapy and pharmacological agents. Future directions for much-needed research will be identified.

 12:00 -1:00pm   lunch provided

SESSION THREE 1:00pm - 2:30pm

EXPERIENCING MINDFULNESS: a Tool for Reducing Pulling & Picking

Mindfulness, a form of awareness training, can be simply defined as the practice of being aware, in a focused, but relaxed, nonjudgmental way, to what is actually arising, in the present moment. Participants will learn a simple meditative technique that can become a powerful recovery tool. In this state, there is emphasis on decreasing “experiential avoidance”, which is the very human tendency to avoid painful emotions, thoughts and situations. Much of living with BFRBs, is about NOT experiencing certain feeling states directly, but rather through a “sensory filter” created by the behavior and its effects.  When you put the filter aside and safely experience your emotional universe more directly, a sense of integration and wholeness occurs that can benefit not only you, but those around you.

2:30-3:15pm BREAK with Refreshments

SESSION FIVE   3:15 – 5:00pm

To round out the day, in the closing session we will focus on creating individual maps or “road-plans,” for implementing one or more of today’s concepts, strategies, and new perspectives into daily action. Then strategies for following up with others (if we want to) will also be chosen! After this, Christina will do a brief Q & A, followed by the opportunity to network with others.

This event is for adults and teens 14 and older, and their parents, who are affected by hair pulling, skin picking and related problems, as well as and treatment providers seeking information to better help their patients. Limited partial scholarships and payment plans are available. Email for information on fee-assistance programs.

Proceeds from this event support TLC programs and services, incldued research, outreach and treatment provider training. CALL 831-457-1004 with questions or phone registration.
