"We should also respect the enemy in our friend."
“Shadows at Home: The Insider Threat in the Private Sector.” Offering a definition and methodology for confronting a broad and complex threat landscape in the corporate environment.
Insider Threat is a generally malicious threat to an organization that comes from individuals within the organization including employees, contractors, partners, and former employees. An insider threat may involve sabotage, espionage, theft of intellectual property or other data, and fraud. The common theme that unites all insiders is that they stand in a position of trust vis-a-vis an organization, and are imputed with loyalty to that organization. The insider has access to systems, information, and resources that put them in a position to violate that trust and loyalty intentionally or unintentionally.
Mike LeBaron is a California licensed attorney with a background in criminal law. He previously worked at the Placer County District Attorney's Office, as well as private criminal defense. He is a member of the Threat Response and Investigations team at Symantec under Global Information Security where he works to mitigate external and internal cyber-threats. He received his education at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, as well as University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, and University of Salzburg in Austria.
