Who are you missing in your recruitment?: Diverse talent is out there you just have to know where to look
We often hear that diversity is a problem in tech and that big companies should do better at hiring people from different backgrounds and we all rally and say 'Yes, Google and Apple and Facebook should do better at that'. But what about the little guy? They need more talent and want to reach a large customer base too, right? So why not improve hiring in a way that reflects the changing demographics—42% of the US will be Black and Latino/a by 2040?
Well, that's just too hard to think about as a startup, right? As a startup founder just scrapping by, looking for your next funder, the last thing you want on your plate is the daunting task of hiring software engineers.
So your options are:
1. Do the work yourself and worry about hiring until after 'this one big project is done'.
2. Send an email (or Facebook) blast to your friends and you hire one of them.
3. Post your job description on a listserv and cross your fingers.
4. Attend this class and find out what hides behind door number 4.
In this class we will explore what steps you can take to hit two bottom lines: 1. hiring talented coders and 2. creating a team filled with people from a variety of backgrounds.
This class blow your mind with a new perspective on how small businesses can—with just as much effort as #1, #2 and #3 above—increase diversity on their team now and not wait until they become the 'Google, Apple, & Facebook's of the world.
About the Instructors
Iris Gardner is the Manager of Events and Outreach at CODE2040. Iris joined CODE2040 from the Student Outreach team at Google where she managed the Freshmen Engineering Practicum internship program for underrepresented students in CS. Iris also worked in the Admissions Office of her alma mater, Pomona College, as well as the Career Development Office and helped launch the inaugural year of Pomona’s $10M campaign for paid summer internships. Iris has a BA in Sociology and Politics from Pomona College and is originally from Denver, CO.
Jennifer Argüello is a Senior Tech Advisor who devises strategies with the Kapor Center to diversify Silicon Valley. She is a speaker and thought leader on women in technology and Latino(a)s in STEM with a mind for the geeky and a heart for social change. For almost two decades she has been a leader in organizations focused on the advancement of women and minorities in STEM. She leads Latino2, the LATISM branch that focuses on empowering Latino(a) founders to build successful ventures to scale. Her work has resulted in much industry recognition, recently being named a 2013 Silicon Valley Latino 40 under 40 Latinos2Watch in Science and Technology, 2011 Femmeonomics Top 50 Women to Watch in Tech2010; and 2010 National Association of Professional Women: Professional Woman of the Year. Jennifer is a Silicon Valley native and dual citizen of Costa Rica and the United States. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from UC San Diego. When not in the office she can be found in nature or on a soccer field.
CODE2040 is a nonprofit organization that creates pathways to educational, professional, and entrepreneurial success in the innovation economy for underrepresented minorities with a specific focus on Blacks and Latino/as.
CODE2040’s flagship program is the summer Fellows Program, which places high performing Black and Latino/a software engineering students in internships with top tech companies and provides them with a leadership development curriculum.
