Share Parents of Children on the Autism Spectrum Share their Experiences at Museums

Event Details

Workshop description: Join us for a morning workshop with parents of children who have autism. They will share their experiences of visiting museums and perspectives on what has worked best, and ways that cultural institutions can reach and further engage young people on the autism spectrum and their families.  Workshop attendees and parent panelists will be divided up into small groups and will participate in facilitated discussions about best practices and exchange perspectives and ideas on providing more welcoming experiences to children who have autism and their family members, and how best to market to and connect with those families in meaningful ways.  Museum professionals and parents alike should come prepared to exchange experiences, perspectives, and ideas, with specific examples.  Coffee and donuts will be provided for this morning workshop.

Hosts: This workshop is hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art by the Museum Access Consortium (MAC) in partnership with the New York Metro Chapter of the National Autism Association. Special thanks to the FAR Fund for their generous support of this workshop series.

Date: Monday, February 25th

Time: 10:00AM-12:00PM

Registration details: This event is open and free to all individuals in the museum and disability fields, but space is limited.  Registration is required.  Please register by selecting a ticket above.

Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art in the Art Study Room at the Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education. Please be sure to enter at the Garage Entrance on the southern end of the building at 80th Street and 5th Avenue.

Due to construction, the 81st Street entrance to The Metropolitan Museum of Art will not be open on Monday.  Therefore, since the Museum is closed on Monday, you will need to enter the building from the southern end of the museum through the garage entrance. Follow these detailed instructions below. Staff from MAC and The MET will be standing outside and inside the route to provide guidance, if needed starting at 9:45AM.

  • You will find the garage entrance at the southern end of the museum. It is located not along the front of the museum that faces 5th Avenue, but on the southern side of the museum, which is aligned with 80th Street.  Click the following link for a google map to see where the entrance is located: http://goo.gl/maps/n52pG

  • You will see a sidewalk that leads up to the garage entrance. The sidewalk is adjacent to the entrance where cars pull inside and has a railing that separates the sidewalk from the entrance for vehicles.

  • Upon on entering the garage, you will see revolving glass doors and an accessible entrance on your right-hand side, which is an entrance into the museum. Enter through either of the doors.

  • You will see a security guard just inside the doors. From there, you will have the option of either taking an elevator or walking down a few steps to get to the ground floor.

  • Once you reach the ground floor, there will be a lobby with an admissions desk, information desk, and security desk. Enter into the lobby.

  • Once you're fully inside the lobby, you will see a long corridor. Walk down that corridor.

  • At the end of the corridor, you will find the Art Study Room on your left-hand side.

  • Staff will be waiting to check you in for the morning workshop.

If you have any problems, please call Danielle Linzer at (347) 423-9998 or Cindy VandenBosch at (917) 687-4960.
