Our "office" (and by that I mean our Yammer feed) is abuzz with tonight's PandoMonthly San Francisco with Tony Hsieh. But once that's a wrap we'll be heading back to New York.
Next Thursday, we'll be following up our sold-out fireside chat with Thrillist and Lerer Ventures co-founder Ben Lerer with a sit down with Jonah Peretti, co-founder of The Huffington Post and BuzzFeed.
Both of our PandoMonthly events in September are fundraisers for Charity:Water, which is why the tickets are $40 this month, not the usual bargain basement price of $20. But let's get back to why this Jonah Peretti event will be so interesting. One of the New York Web ecosystem's big advantages is the talent and smarts from its old media roots as applied to decisively new media businesses. Peretti may define where new media is going more than anywhere else right now. That includes the good -- an almost unbelievable ability to grab the world by the lapels and make it laugh and cry but mostly click. And the bad -- a reliance on kittens, fluff, and SEO link bait have been snobby old-media gripes of both The Huffington Post and BuzzFeed.
Is Peretti the future of journalism? And if so, is that a good thing or a bad thing? I expect this to be the central point of our discussion next week, and will say a lot about where media -- one of those lifeblood businesses of New York -- is headed.
