Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider Update Course

Special Note: As of March 1, 2008 if your PALS card is expired, you may attend an update (renewal) course, but you may not remediate. You must pass all testing stations on your first attempt. If you do not pass all testing stations on your first attempt, you will need to complete the PALS Provider Course (2 Day). BRING YOUR ACLS CARD AND YOUR CURRENT BLS CARD WITH YOU. You will be asked to present both during registration.

Description and Target Audience: This American Heart Association workshop is designed to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children, resulting in improved outcomes. This program is designed for physicians, nurses, paramedics, and respiratory therapists, who either direct or participate in resuscitation of a infant or child, whether in or out of the hospital. The update course is for those who have had PALS within the last 2 years.


At the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the timely recognition and interventions required to prevent respiratory and cardiac arrest in any pediatric patient.
  2. Describe the systematic approach to pediatric assessment by using the initial impression, primary and secondary assessments, and diagnostic tests.
  3. Describe priorities and specific interventions for infants and children with respiratory and /or circulatory emergencies.
  4. Explain the importance of effective team dynamics, including individual roles and responsibilities, during a pediatric resuscitation.
  5. Describe the key elements of postresuscitation management.
  6. Perform effective, high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) when appropriate.
  7. Perform effective respiratory management within scope of practice.
  8. Select and apply appropriate cardiorespiratory monitoring.
  9. Select and administer the appropriate medications and electrical therapies when presented with an arrhythmia scenario.
  10. Establish rapid vascular access to administer fluid and medications.
  11. Demonstrate effective communication and team dynamics both as a team member and as a team leader.
  12. Verbalize and demonstrate the initial trauma assessment and stabilization of the injured infant and child.

1:20-3:20       Lesson 13 and Lesson 14: Core Case Testing Stations – will break into groups

                        Cardiac Cases 1-4

                        Respiratory Cases 1-4 or Shock Cases 1-4

Testing: Written exam which must be passed with an 84%. One-on-one skills testing required.

Course Length: 8 hours

Certification Length: 2 years

Includes: Student Manual and certification card.

Location: CoxHealth Education Center, CoxHealth North, K400, 4th Floor, Classroom #1.

Directions: Enter Cox North from the Robberson Ave. Northwest Entrance. Upon entering the building turn right and take the elevator to the 4th floor. You will arrive in the Education Center lobby.

Educational Credit:

Per the Department of Insurance, Financial Institutions and Professional Registration, Division 2255-Missouri Board for Respiratory Care, 20 CSR 2255-4.010 Continuing Education Requirements, Section 6-C, “Six (6) hours will be awarded for the successful completion of a course (excluding preparatory courses) related to Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS/Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).  Programs identified within this subsection will not require pre-approval by AARC, its state affiliates or the board for acceptance as hours towards fulfilling the continuing education requirement.  However, not more than a total of twelve (12) hours will be awarded for any combination of the above mentioned programs during a two (2)-year period.” 

Contact hours are 6.0 for this activity.

CoxHealth Prehospital Services is an approved provider of continuing education by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Unit of EMS.  This activity has been approved for 6.5 contact hours.  The Training Center number is 07710C.

There are no credit hours for physicians or nurses.

This activity has been approved by CoxHealth for 2.5 trauma contact hours for CoxHealth employees.

Participants will receive statements of credit at the end of the program when all requirements for credit have been met. Satisfactory completion of objectives will occur through course attendance. In order to receive a statement of credit, all participants must sign-in at the registration desk; demonstrate the skills necessary to complete this course; satisfactorily pass core case testing stations and written exam; and turn in a completed evaluation form at the end of the program
