Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider Course (2 Day)

 

Please Note: This is a 2-day course. By selecting the date listed you are registering for this date and the following day. The times are Day 1 (8:00am-5:00pm) and Day 2 (8:00am-4:00pm).

 

Description and Target Audience: This American Heart Association workshop is designed to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children, resulting in improved outcomes. The program is designed for physicians, nurses, paramedics, and respiratory therapists, who either direct or participate in resuscitation of an infant or child, whether in or out of the hospital.

 

Objectives

At the end of this course, participants should be able to:

1.    Describe the timely recognition and interventions required to prevent respiratory and cardiac arrest in any pediatric patient.

2.    Describe the systematic approach to pediatric assessment by using the initial impression, primary and secondary assessments, and diagnostic tests.

3.    Describe priorities and specific interventions for infants and children with respiratory and /or circulatory emergencies.

4.    Explain the importance of effective team dynamics, including individual roles and responsibilities, during a pediatric resuscitation.

5.    Describe the key elements of post-resuscitation management.

6.    Perform effective, high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) when appropriate.

7.    Perform effective respiratory management within scope of practice.

8.    Select and apply appropriate cardio-respiratory monitoring.

9.    Select and administer the appropriate medications and electrical therapies when presented with an arrhythmia scenario.

10.Perform rapid vascular access to administer fluid and medications.

11.Demonstrate effective communication and team dynamics both as a team member and as a team leader.

12.Verbalize and demonstrate the initial trauma assessment and stabilization of the injured infant and child.

Testing: Written exam (50 questions) which must be passed with an 84%. One-on-one skills testing required.

 

Course Length: 15 hours

 

Certification Length: 2 years

 

Includes: Student Manual and certification card.

 

Location: CoxHealth Education Center, CoxHealth North, K400, 4th Floor, Classroom #1.

 

Directions: Enter Cox North from the Robberson Ave. Northwest Entrance. Upon entering the building turn right and take the elevator to the 4th floor. You will arrive in the Education Center lobby.

CoxHealth is accredited by the Missouri State Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians.  CoxHealth designates this live activity for a maximum of 12.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

 

CoxHealth-Educational Services is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Missouri Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. 

            12.75 Contact Hours 

 

Per the Department of Insurance, Financial Institutions and Professional Registration, Division 2255-Missouri Board for Respiratory Care, 20 CSR 2255-4.010 Continuing Education Requirements, Section 6-C, “Six (6) hours will be awarded for the successful completion of a course (excluding preparatory courses) related to Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS/Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).  Programs identified within this subsection will not require pre-approval by AARC, its state affiliates or the board for acceptance as hours towards fulfilling the continuing education requirement.  However, not more than a total of twelve (12) hours will be awarded for any combination of the above mentioned programs during a two (2)-year period.”  Contact hours are 6.0 for this activity.

 

CoxHealth Prehospital Services is an approved provider of continuing education by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Unit of EMS.  This activity has been approved for 12.75 contact hours.  The Training Center number is 07710C.

 

This program has been approved by CoxHealth for 4.0 trauma contact hours for CoxHealth employees.
