As a part of their exhibit, Doin' It in Public: Feminism and Art at the Woman's Building, Otis College of Art and Design in partnership with the New Short Fiction Series present Woman’s Building Writers Workshop authors. Featuring work by Bia Lowe, Deena Metzger and Terry Wolverton performed by Jesse Holcomb, Barbara Keegan and Sally Shore. The evening includes a panel moderated by Cheryl Klein, director of Poets & Writers West.

Doin' It in Public: Feminism and Art at the Woman's Building comprises an exhibition, two scholarly publications, and series of public events that document, contextualize and pay tribute to the groundbreaking work of feminist artists and art cooperatives that were centered in and around the Los Angeles Woman's Building (downtown L.A.) in the 1970s and 1980s. Doin' It In Public is part of Pacific Standard Time: Art in LA 1945-1980, an unprecedented collaboration initiated by the Getty that brings together more than sixty cultural institutions from across Southern California for six months beginning October 2011 to tell the story of the birth of the L.A. art scene. Pacific Standard Time is an initiative of the Getty. The presenting sponsor is Bank of America.
Bia Lowe’s essays have appeared in many magazines and journals, including Salmagundi, The Kenyon Review, Harper's and the webzine Killing the Buddha. Her work has been anthologized in Another City: Writings From Los Angeles (City Lights Books), Turning Toward Home: Reflections On The Family From Harper's Magazine (Franklin Square Press), Sister & Brother: Lesbians & Gay Men Write About Their Lives Together (Harper SanFrancisco) and Helter Skelter: L.A. Art In The 1990s (Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.) Lowe’s first book, Wild Ride, won the 1996 QPB New Visions Award for creative non-fiction. She divides her time between California, New York and Ireland.
Deena Metzger, founder of The Woman’s Building Writers Program, is a poet, novelist, essayist, storyteller, teacher, healer and medicine woman who has taught and counseled for over forty years, in the process of which she has developed therapies (Healing Stories) which creatively address life threatening diseases, spiritual and emotional crises, as well as community, political and environmental disintegration. She conducts training groups on the spiritual, creative, political and ethical aspects of healing and peacemaking, individual, community and global, drawing deeply on alliance with spirit, indigenous teachings and the many wisdom traditions. Metzger is the author of many books, including most recently, the novels La Negra y Blanca and Feral; Ruin and Beauty: New and Selected Poems; From Grief Into Vision: A Council; Doors: A Fiction for Jazz Horn; Entering the Ghost River: Meditations on the Theory and Practice of Healing; The Other Hand; Tree: Essays and Pieces, A Sabbath Among the Ruins, Looking for the Faces of God and Writing For Your Life.
Terry Wolverton is a literary artist and author of nine books of fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction, including Insurgent Muse: Life And Art At The Woman's Building and most recently the novel, Stealing Angel. She is currently working with composer David Ornette Cherry on adapting her book, Embers, as a jazz opera. Wolverton has edited thirteen literary compilations and co-edited, with Sondra Hale, From Site To Vision: The Woman's Building In Contemporary Culture. She is the founder of Writers At Work, a creative writing center where she teaches; and is also an Associate Faculty Mentor in the MFA Writing Program at Antioch University Los Angeles and Adjunct Faculty in the M.A. in Arts Management program at Claremont Graduate University. Wolverton spent thirteen years at The Woman's Building, beginning as a student enrolled in the Feminist Studio Workshop and concluding her time as Executive Director. Sally Shore: (performing Inside A House One Is Truly Alone by Deena Metzger) Acclaimed Spoken Word Artist Sally Shore was a 2001 Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department Regional Arts Grant winner for her New Short Fiction Series™, L.A.’s longest running spoken word series now in its 15th year of bringing the freshest new voices in West Coast short fiction to Los Angeles audiences. She appears frequently in spoken word festivals and literary events including Beach=Culture, KPCC’s Crawford Family Forum, When Words Collide, California State University Los Angeles’ Cup O’Culture Series, the NoHo International Arts Festival, “Live” from the Red Tent and the Newport Beach Public Library’s Manuscript Literary Lecture Series. Shore, a regular on both NBC’s Suddenly Susan debut season and the 2000 season of BET’s Live from L.A./Saturday Night Slam, has also appeared on CBS’ Bless This House and General Hospital. Profiled on Home and Garden Television’s Party At Home, she also recorded a spoken word guest track on D-Zire’s debut album.
Jesse Holcomb (performing Resurrection 1976 by Terry Woverton) is an L.A. native, actress, director and yoga instructor. A Vassar graduate, she recently appeared on L.A. stages in Passion and Precision at Theater 68, as a guest artist with the sketch comedy group, Ironic T-Shirt, and directed the original play, Passing Proper, for the 2011 Hollywood Fringe Festival. Holcomb co-creates instructional yoga clips for Sacred Energy Arts, and appeared this July in Common’s docu-series Vindicated for BET.
Barbara Keegan (performing Lost by Bia Lowe), an Emmy Award winner for PBS’ Handy Ma’am, made her stage debut at age 3 singing a duet with her comedy godfather, Danny Kaye. She has made over 500 commercial and television appearances worldwide, and can be seen in films from Caddyshack to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. L.A. theater audiences have seen Keegan in the Pasadena Playhouse’s award-winning Joined at the Head, in the five year run of Bill W. and Dr. Bob at Theatre 68, and most recently as the blarney-speaking Nurse in Romeo and Juliet for Merry War Theatre Group.
Cheryl Klein is the author of Lilac Mines (Manic D Press) and The Commuters, which won City Works Press’ Ben Reitman Award. She is a Center for Cultural Innovation grant recipient for her novel-in-progress about wayward circus performers. Klein’s fiction has appeared in The Normal School, Other and several anthologies. She directs the California office of Poets & Writers, Inc. by day, and blogs about life, art and carbohydrates at breadandbread.blogspot.com.
The New Short Fiction Series, L.A.’s longest running spoken words series, is celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2011. Presented at The Writers Junction in Santa Monica in cooperation with Barnes & Noble, The New Short Fiction Series is a recognized standout in the Southland’s artistic landscape. Each performance features carefully selected excerpts from new works of short fiction by a West Coast writer. The New Short Fiction Series is directly responsible for placing 6 newly released books on the Los Angeles Times’ bestseller list, and has been the “jump off” for many collections and novels from unpublished stories featured in the series. Sally Shore produces this monthly live program, performing with a rotating guest cast of some of L.A.’s most talented working actors.

Directions: The Beach House is located at 415 Pacific Coast Highway, Santa Monica, CA 90402 on the west side of Pacific Coast Highway, a half mile north of the California Incline and a half mile south of Chautauqua Blvd. Plenty of public parking is available - enter off PCH at the Beach House Way traffic light. The facility is easily accessible by foot or bike from the beach bike path, although the Beach closes at sunset. There is ample bike parking at racks throughout the site - remember to bring your own lock.
Parking: There is an hourly/daily parking charge at the park and pay machines available in three areas of the ACBH parking lot. Fees change; please check the website for details.
