Join in this first ever 5k run/walk for orangutans and bring awareness to the threats to wild orangutan populations and how we can all help.

Orangutans, like humans, have an incredibly close relationship with their mothers. Because orangutans are solitary apes, young orangutans are totally dependent on their mothers and stay with them until they are six to eight years old. Unfortunately, due to the increase in demand for palm oil, orangutan habitat is being destroyed and orangutans are losing their lives. Help AAZK and the Zoo raise awareness about orangutan survival and protect this species and their habitat.
Proceeds from the event will benefit AAZK partner the International Animal Rescue (IAR) Ketapang Rescue Center and Zoo partner HUTAN-KOCP.
- IAR Ketapang is a rescue and rehabilitation center for orangutans in West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. They take in orphaned, injured or abandoned orangutans and care for them, releasing many back into the wild.
- HUTAN-KOCP, the Kinabatangan Orangutan Conservation Programme, in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo works to identify and address the complex threats faced by orangutans and promote their conservation at all levels, from local communities to government agencies.
