What's happening in your neighborhood?
A citizen map-a-thon of development projects in New York City

OpenUrban is holding a map-a-thon as part of the New Museum's Ideas City Festival. The event is being hosted by The New School in Lower Manhattan. We will be mapping and gathering information on urban development projects that affect you - the citizens of New York. We will focus on:
  • Hurricane Planning
  • New Open Spaces
However, you are free to post ideas on the Facebook Page before the event as well as propose ideas during the event (un-conference style). This is in keeping with the spirit of OpenUrban - that people's concerns and interests should be emergent rather than dictated.

Location
  • 66 W. 12th Street (Orozco Room7th Floor), New York, NY

Event Schedule
  • 10:30am - Intro: What is OpenUrban?
  • 10:45am - Demo: How Does OpenUrban work?
  • 11:30am - Discuss Themes
  • 12:00pm - Lunch (provided)
  • 1:00pm - Map-a-thon!
  • 5:00pm - End
* Please join us after the map-a-thon in the Bowery's fine drinking establishments!
** If you can't attend the Map-a-thon stop by our booth at the Street Festival in the Bowery.

"The 2013 iteration of IDEAS CITY, the biennial festival created to explore the future city and to effect change, will take place in downtown New York from May 1–4, 2013. Formerly known as the Festival of Ideas for the New City, IDEAS CITYwas founded by the New Museum as a major collaboration between dozens of downtown arts, education, and community organizations to harness the power of the creative community and imagine our collective future. This ambitious initiative is built upon the core belief that arts and culture constitute a driving force behind the vitality of urban centers worldwide."

OpenUrban

OpenUrban is a nonprofit organization and web platform which promotes the exchange of information and ideas on current and proposed urban development. Specifically, it is the first user-generated web map and wiki focusing on this issue. We embrace crowd sourcing technology as a means to inform and empower. By combining written media with spatial information, OpenUrban creates a powerful tool for people to understand how their cities and communities are changing and supports their active participation in that change.
