OpenShift Origin Community Day is coming to Prague on September 22!

Come join Red Hat engineers and OpenShift Origin community members for a OpenShift Origin Open Source PaaS Community Day taking place on September 22 in conjunction with DrupalCon Prague.

Origin is the Community-Driven, Red Hat-Sponsored Open Source Next Generation of Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS).  

Here's your chance to take a deep-dive into Red Hat's OpenStack and OpenShift engineering efforts including hands-on tutorials on how to deploy OpenShift to OpenStack plus building your own cartridges. Registration is free!

12:00 - 12:10 / Welcome to OpenShift Origin Community

Presenter: Diane Mueller

Diane Mueller (Cloud Ecosystem Evangelist) will set the stage for the day's event with a history of the OpenShift Origin Community efforts. She'll discuss the need for an Open Source Platform-as-a-Service, the contributions made to date, and how to contribute to OpenShift Origin.

12:10 - 12:30 / Introduction to OpenShift - Private, Public and Community
Presenter: Diane Mueller, OpenShift Origin Community Manager & Red Hat Cloud Evangelist
Marek Jelen (Evangelist, OpenShift) will introduce Red Hat's PaaS. He'll describe the several flavors of OpenShift ranging from the upstream community project Origin, the EC2-based online offering at http://openshift.redhat.com, to the corresponding commercial offering, OpenShift Enterprise. OpenShift Origin and Online will be demonstrated. 
12:30 - 1:30 / OpenShift Origin Internals
Presenters: Marek Jelen, OpenShift Evangelist
In this talk. we will dive deep into Origin's internals and architecture. Topics covered include a platform overview of the role Brokers and Cartridges play. An examination of system resources and application containers called "Gears" and "Nodes." 
1:30 - 2:00 / Deploying OpenShift 
Presenter: Vojtek Vitek, OpenShift , Senior Engineer
We  will introduce  Red Hat OpenStack (RHOS), and describe how Red Hat is playing a major  role in the evolution of a truly open infrastructure as a service (IaaS) platform.  We'll describe the  upstream OpenStack project, the components, and what RedHat  brings to the table in providing an enterprise OpenStack distribution.  We will  then demonstrate running OpenShift on a RHOS installation and discuss  the benefits of running OpenShift in this configuration as well as joint  roadmap for future integration.

2:15 - 3:00 / Building Domain-specific PaaS with OpenShift Origin

Presenter:  Alexander Grzesik, Softwarearchitekt, Medisite.de 

Alexander will discuss customizing OpenShift Origin for the Healthcare industry to meet with specific to German government compliance regulations for cloud security as part of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology's Trusted Cloud initiative also know as TRESOR - Trusted Ecosystem for Standardized and Open cloud-based Resources. 
3:00 - 3:45 / Extending OpenShift Origin: Build Your Own Cartridge

Presenter: Vojtech Vitek, Red Hat Sr. Engineer
Cartridges allow developers to provide services running on top of the Red Hat OpenShift Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS). OpenShift already provides cartridges for numerous web application frameworks and databases. Writing your own cartridges allows you to customize or enhance an existing service, or provide new services. In this session, the presenter will discuss best practices for cartridge development and the latest changes in the OpenShift cartridge support.
 * Latest changes made in the platform to ease cartridge development
 * OpenShift Cartridges vs. plugins
 * Outline for development of a new cartridge
 * Customization of existing cartridges
 * Quickstarts: leveraging a cartridge or cartridges to provide a complete application

Presenter: Steven Merrill, CTO, Phase2 

In honor of our co-located host conference DrupalCon/Prague - we'll do a deep dive on deploying, scaling and managing Drupal on OpenShift. We'll also walk thru deploying and testing the latest Drupal 8 beta release on OpenShift and show you how to leverage PaaS to improve your application testing & quality assurance processes. We'll talk about what it takes to create a custom PHP Cartridged & Build a Customr !uickstart for Drupal and how you can contribute to the exisiting Drupal on OpenShift efforts.



4:15 - 4:30 / ownCloud & OpenShift 


Presenter: Arthur Schiwon, Senior Software Developer, OwnCloud 

ownCloud is a free software suite, written in PHP, that provides file storage, synchronization, and sharing. It provides the same basic features of Dropbox or Box.net. As an open source application, you can install it on any computer you control. This means you know how and where your data is stored, something which existing hosted solutions abstract away from you. Arthur Schiwon  will demostrate how individuals and enterprises can now easily install their own "ownCloud" with the community-build & now ownCloud maintained OpenShift Quickstart, and you can join the more than 800,000 active users of the ownCloud open source project.

We'll supply the pizza & beer, and host a mini-Hack-a-thon so you can jump start your own Cartridges or learn the ropes of OpenShift Origin with other community members and the Red Hat engineers!
