Event Details

The launch of the exhibition will include a free public reception for the Brower Center audience. Square One Organic Spirits cocktails and wine will be available for a suggested donation.

The Brower Center’s Art/Act Award and Exhibition was created to honor established artists who have dedicated a significant part of their careers to using art’s unique transformative power in the service of activism. In 2014, the Center is pleased to announce that Art/Act will go to noted sculptor and landscape artist Maya Lin, whose work has been featured in dozens of museums around the world and is known most widely for her Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC.

The Brower Center show will feature selected sculptures made of pins, wire, and cast recycled silver, as well as multimedia projects from Lin’s recent work focused on threatened environments.  In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Lin was inspired to highlight the fragility of bodies of water around the world, creating abstract wall sculptures to represent entities like the San Francisco Bay and Tuolumne River, both of which will be featured at the Center.  These static pieces, along with the wire sculpture Maquette for Where the Land Meets the Sea and other works, will complement a number of wall pieces and an interactive display of Lin’s What is Missing?project.  Considered by the artist to be her final memorial, What Is Missing? is dedicated to documenting vanishing species and environments around the world through an interactive website that includes a number of “wormholes,” in-depth explorations of the environmental history of a specific locale.

About Art/Act: Maya Lin

Every fall, the Brower Center presents the Art/Act Award & Exhibition, created to honor established artists who have dedicated a significant part of their careers to using art’s unique transformative power in the service of activism. In 2014, the Center recognizes internationally acclaimed sculptor, architectural designer, and ardent environmentalist Maya Lin, known most widely for her Vietnam Veterans Memorial, but whose most recent work has focused on threatened ecosystems. In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Lin was inspired to highlight the fragility of bodies of water around the world, creating abstract wall sculptures to represent entities like the San Francisco Bay and Tuolumne River, both of which will be featured at the Center.  Art/Act: Maya Lin will also highlight the What Is Missing? project, dedicated to documenting vanishing species and environments around the world through an interactive website. As part of this year’s Art/Act, the Center is partnering with Heyday Books’s Malcolm Margolin to add an in-depth exploration of the Bay Area’s environmental history as a permanent contribution to the What Is Missing? project.
