To merely refer to North Carolina native and Alexandria, VA resident Shelly Bell as a curious and talented consumer of life's most positive energies would only tell half of the story. An award-winning poet, as well as a songwriter and published author, her diversity of skills allow her to expertly navigate the space between performance and journalism. Excelling as a truly dynamic force in local, national and now international media, her work as spoken-word poet has led to her currently serving as an Arts Commissioner for the City of Alexandria ,VA, Director of the Seven City Art Society, LLC and also being a BMI accredited songwriter. Furthermore, her evocative, forthright and conversational writing style is now showcased on Washington, DC/New York, NY based hipster mega-blog Brightest Young Things, internationally respected hip-hop cultural site BrooklynBodega, com, portal for Free - the former 106 and Park host and current FM radio personality - freesworld.com, DC area hip-hop site DCMumboSauce.com and Bell's own TheOpenOnion.com. Shelly Bell is unquestionably an extraordinarily gifted artist mixing uncommon honesty with a populist style. Her unflinching desire to remain honest to herself and her aspiration makes her personal motto entirely true. "Regret nothing and write everything!"
If there was going to be a successor to Maya Angelou, many have said that it would most definitely be Mary Bowman. Though she has only been performing for 3 years Mary has graced stages from your average local poetry open mic to The 2012 Smithsonian Folklife Festival: Creativity & Crisis. Becoming a Nationally known poet has not wavered Mary's ability to offer herself raw and unadulterated, as a young woman living with HIV."Be The Change You Wish To See In The World" is manifested in Mary's everyday life as she plans to take her story across seas becoming an Internationally known poet & Advocate for HIV/AIDS. Mary is currently building her own organization, Purpose Over Entertainment (P.O.E.T.) which is dedicated to using social media, visual and performing arts to foster holistic conversations regarding those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in the Greater Washington, DC area in an effort to eliminate the stigmas surrounding HIV/AIDS. Mary is a poet, advocate, author, singer, however at the end of the day Mary is just Mary; A 23 year old woman, born with HIV. She smiles, she cries, she laughs, and she frowns just like anyone else.
