Don Juan Camarillo donated 100 acres of land in 1927 to establish St. John’s Seminary, which opened its doors in 1939.
St. John’s Seminary is located at 5012 Seminary Road, just East of Lewis/ Somis Roads (enter off Upland, and follow the signs to the free parking and tour). Monsignor Craig Cox, the new Rector/ President of St. John’s Seminary, issued the following invitation to the community:
“’Come and see!’ (John 1:35-39). With these words, Jesus invited Andrew and another disciple to spend time with him and learn of His mission. On Saturday, April 24, 2010, the community of St. John’s invite you to “come and see” our home, the place where seminarians have been receiving training and formation for ministry as priests for the past 70 years! Tours will be conducted by seminarians, highlighted by a look into a seminarian’s day as well as the places where we live, pray, study, eat, recreate, and engage in all the other activities that make up the daily life at St. John’s. Architectural points of interest include the monastic-style Seminary Chapel of St. John the Evangelist and the 45,000-volume Edward Laurence Doheny Memorial Library. Welcome to St. John’s Seminary!”
There are several improvements underway or planned at St. John’s, including modifications of the old dorms and improvements to classrooms, the philosophy library and landscaping around the campus. An updated website with directions to St. John’s, news and photos on the seminary’s improvements and planned lectures, concerts and other special events can be found at www.stjohnsem.edu
