Event Details

Hi! We're sold out! Unfortunately if you still want to attend you won't be able to since we've had to finalize our attendee list for our venue host. Sorry! Hope to see you next year, though!

====================================

International Open Data Day is Februrary 23, 2013!

Anyone with an interest in open data is encouraged to come to our hackathon in Washington, DC. It'll be one of several dozen similar events throughout the world happening on that day.

This will be DC's second Open Data Day hackathon. Last year (in December 2011) 45 participants focused on projects related to government oversight and local transportation. (The event was sponsored by POPVOX and Wikimedia DC and hosted by the DC Public Library.) This will also be the second Open Development Data day. The previous was held on December 9, 2012 with 40 participants and was a lead-in event to the USAID and White House-led Development Data Jam held on December 10th.

This year we'll be doing all that, plus design challenges, and we'll also be holding an introductory tutorial on open data. You don't need any particular skills to get something out of this hackathon.

Pro-Friday?

Last year...

The last Open Data Day hackathon in DC was on Dec. 3, 2011. It was co-hosted by POPVOX (Josh Tauberer) and Wikimedia DC (Katie Filbert). See what we did on the post-event recap at https://www.popvox.com/features/opendataday2011. The theme of our hackathon was open government data, and participants worked on improving access to U.S. law, scanning federal spending for anomalies following Benford’s Law, understanding farm subsidy grants, building local transit apps, and keeping Congress accountable. Only about half of the participants were programmers, but everyone found a way to be involved.

The last Development Data Day in D.C. was held on December 09, 2012 in the lead-up to the Development DataJam hosted by White House’s Office of Science & Technology. Those events primarily served as ideation jams to bring together issue area experts and data experts to develop new ideas and partner for new solutions. Experts were sought out to inform the discussions, but anyone with an interest in open data in development were welcomed and participated.
