Description
This course will explore the assumptions and principles of a trauma-informed approach in organizations that provide behavioral health and co-occurring services to individuals and families. It will also examine the need for the entire organization (including administrators, support staff, clinicians and clinical supervisors) to incorporate a comprehensive understanding of the prevalence and impact of trauma on the consumers of mental health and addiction services, the role that trauma plays in the development of mental health and substance use issues, and the complexity and diversity of ways people recover and heal from trauma. Emphasis will be placed on workforce development, screening and assessment, general treatment considerations, evidence-informed/evidence-based trauma specific interventions and cultural competencies.
How It Works
This is a four-week, online course. Each week students are given material to complete online at their convenience during the week. Course materials and instructions will be emailed to all registered participants prior to the start date. NOTE: You must provide a valid, working email address to use throughout the course
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Patricia A. Burke, MSW, LCSW, BCD is a Board Certified Diplomat in Clinical Social Work, a Certified Clinical Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs Social Worker and a Certified Clinical Supervisor with over 30 of clinical and teaching experience.

Learning Objectives
- Describe the key principles of a trauma informed approach to treatment in behavioral health and co-occurring services and how they differ from traditional approaches
- Describe the guidelines for implementing a trauma-informed approach in behavioral health treatment services, the elements of trauma-informed workforce development and training, and trauma-informed counselor competencies
- Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of trauma on people, an ability to utilize trauma screening and assessment protocols in a range of treatment settings, and an understanding of clinical issues across services.
- Describe general treatment issues, the range of trauma-specific interventions and cultural competencies related to treatment in a trauma-informed program.
