Event Co-Chairs: Penelope Fireman and Kathleen VanDernoot

2013 Community Leadership Award Recipient: Simone Winston

One Family, Inc.'s Families of Inspiration is a unique fundraising event that brings together hundreds of supporters who work together to end family homelessness in Massachusetts. Launched in 2012, this one-day annual celebration brings together the families and children we serve, families currently living in shelters, and our many supporters to highlight the needs of our most vulnerable community members. Each year we engage participants in activities that raise awareness about the issues of poverty and homelessness and how we can come together and work as "One Family" to help solve the crisis at hand.

Families of Inspiration will be held at beautiful Belkin Family Lookout Farm in South Natick, Massachusetts on Sunday, June 2, 2013 from 4 – 7 pm*.
The event will be held in the children’s play area and will feature family-friendly games, arts and crafts, music and activities geared to children ages 2 through 12. Highlights include:

  • Live Music Performances by Josh and the Jamtones
  • Create a One Family Tree and One Family Album
  • Train Rides, Face Painting and Magic Acts
  • Cookie Decoration with Dancing Deer Baking Company
  • Family-Style BBQ Dinner

This year we will honor Simone Winston with One Family's Community Leadership Award. This award honors those who are committed to improving the lives of homeless families throughout the Commonwealth. Simone Winston's philanthropic efforts, in partnership with her husband Ted, have included support for many area charities and educational organizations helping both children and families. In addition, Winston Flowers sponsors Charity in Bloom, a program that supports many critical community agencies, including One Family.

One Family, Inc.

The mission of One Family, Inc. is to end family homelessness in Massachusetts. This mission grows out of a core belief that no parent and child should be without a home of their own in such a richly resourced state. To be successful, we know we must address family poverty; the two go hand in hand. One Family approaches our mission in two ways. First, we work to change the response of government and private agencies from providing shelter to preventing homelessness and creating pathways for families to afford stable housing. Second, we provide direct service programs that help individual families move from poverty and homelessness to economic security by supporting their success in higher education and the workforce, and providing the resources they need to begin building family assets for the future.

Our signature direct service program, One Family Scholars, serves low-income, homeless and at-risk single parents living at, or more typically well below, 200% of the Federal Poverty level. Through the One Family Scholars program, these single parents are awarded flexible funds to bridge the gap between their existing resources and the true costs they incur to attend college. This financial aid is paired with coaching to help them stay in school and on track to a family-supporting career.

One Family relies on public and private donations to support its programs and initiatives.
